In Search of Unexplained Anomalies

July 28th, 2007 by John Wolfe

When I was a kid I used to look forward to the television series, “In Search of”, hosted by Leonard Nimoy. The series would take viewers on a documentary style adventure into the world of the unexplained. Each week a new subject would be covered, everything from vampires to alien visitors was fair game. While they would often cover paranormal subject matter, they seemed to (if my memory serves me) gravitate more towards the odd and strange. I titled this entry in honor of that classic program and their penchant for covering anomalous oddities.

When I first started writing blog posts for Season of Shadows I never planned on spending any time on things like UFOs, Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster etc. I didn’t make that decision because I felt those things aren’t interesting (I used to eat that stuff up when I was younger). Rather I knew I wanted to focus on subjects that tied in more with the mystical- things like the soul, spiritual empowerment, and life after death. I wanted to write about these subjects because I feel they provide a doorway into discovering useful, life changing techniques that touch the human spirit and positively affect (hopefully) the lives of my blog visitors. I didn’t feel that writing about alien bodies discovered at the Roswell crash site, or discussing chupacabra attacks in Mexico provided a lot of benefit for my readers. Nevertheless, since the concept of this post is very heavily tied in with my last one, I decided it would be appropriate to discuss these unexplained anomalies, just this once. I’m placing the sightings of all things we have no hard physical proof for the existence of, into the category of the anomalous.

Even though I was fascinated, as a child, by stories of alien beings, the Yeti, lake monsters of Ogopogo and Loch Ness, and many other aspects of cryptozoology, I couldn’t get past the issue that no physical remains from any of these creatures/beings, have ever been discovered. Of course it’s been stated, many times, that our government has been hording their fair share of both living and dead aliens for many decades. While I’m not going to delve into government cover ups, since it’s beyond the point and scope of this post- I will say anything is possible. Instead I want to approach this subject from the stance that we really have no hard physical evidence (government UFO stashes aside) for the existence/visitation of these apparent anomalies, yet their sightings continue.

While the majority of these sightings can probably be chalked up to common ordinary things, many are extremely credible and unexplained. Let’s just throw out a ballpark estimate here- let’s say that three percent of all anomalous sightings in the last one hundred years are actually accurate and credible, meaning they were not items or animals that have a known earthly explanation. Let’s stay super conservative and assume there were only 950,000 sightings of all anomalous activity, total, in the last century (I’m sure this number is ridiculously low). Our figure of three percent yields 28,500 credible sightings in a one hundred year time span. This averages out to twenty three and three fourths sightings per month, per year, for an entire century. That’s an amazing amount and due to the fact I was being very conservative, I’m sure that number is extremely higher. What are these people witnessing and where do these things disappear to, without leaving a trace of hard physical evidence (especially those that appear to be bound to this earth)?

While they could be witnessing exactly what they describe, I believe it’s more likely that the majority of credible reports are witnessing hallucinations. But before I start sounding like a staunch skeptic, let’s take a closer look at what a hallucination could be, from the point of view that we create our own reality. In Exploring and Creating Our Reality I stated: “I believe that reality… [is] thought into being and every action we take is merely a follow through of each of our thoughts, bringing those thoughts into existence until they become fully developed physical manifestations.” A hallucination is nothing more than an extremely energetic thought that is in the process of being brought into existence, but an element (in the form of action- whatever that may be) has not been taken to fully develop the thought into physical manifestation. In other words hallucinations are partially manifested things, at a level slightly beyond plain thought. They sit on the fence between the physical and ethereal. They have been dwelled upon long enough and by enough people that they are like a snowball rolling downhill. They continue gaining more and more power, yet they still aren’t full physical manifestations.

Another option is that these hallucinations could be actual physical manifestations, in other environments, outside of the earth plane. If we go back to The Energy Matrix theory, in which all things exist in a massive sea of energy, which includes our consciousness, the earth plane, all other physical planetary planes, non-physical planes, thoughts, ideas and much more- we can see the possibilities. Within this energy matrix there is no separation, no past, no present, no future- everything co-exists simultaneously, without the boundaries of time. We are all bouncing thoughts and emotions off of one another, through consciousness.

If this matrix is at the heart of existence and existence stems from it, then it’s quite possible that many sightings could be interpretations of thought, coming from other forms of existence (through the matrix) right into a person’s present existence on the earth plane. The thought is only capable of showing up in the form of a fleeting sighting, not as a fully manifested physical object or creature in our environment. The person, who serves as the receiver or even the originator of the thought, has no idea that they are witnessing a partial manifestation of thought energy. They believe the sighting to be an actual physical object/animal/being that is interacting, in real time and space, on the earth plane. We could also be sending powerful thoughts to other planes of existence as well, and they too are seeing anomalous oddities in their environment. These anomalies may in fact be considered ordinary animals or things on our planet, yet in other environments they would be considered odd. It’s been said that every thought that has ever been thought, past and present, exists “out there.” What if “out there” is in the energy matrix and these anomalies actually exist on other planes of existence? When a person is capable of viewing anomalous hallucinatory thoughts, I believe they are tapping into the same mechanism that powers psychic abilities, foreshadowing, and ESP.

What about mass sightings like the UFOs over Phoenix, Mexico City and parts of the Soviet Union, where hundreds of thousands witnessed the events? Again, I’m not saying that these couldn’t have been the real deal, but what if there was a high concentration of thought energy, partially manifesting through the consciousness of the individuals in those cities? It all started with one person’s ability to decipher it, then it became believable to the others until they too were able to witness the objects. All of this transference is occurring at the subconscious level and appearing, from time to time, at the conscious physical level. So it’s quite believable that what you’re seeing is a physically manifested object.

While this theory could explain anomalous sightings, it doesn’t do much for reports of alien abductions. I feel that the majority of abduction reports have more in common with astral projection and out of body experiences than they do with physical alien interaction. Most of these experiences occur late at night, prior to falling asleep or after immediately waking. Both of these moments, during the sleep state, are ideal for projecting because of the overly detached sensation that accompanies them. Abduction reports center around the physical body being frozen and unable to move, a feeling of being watched by sentient beings, and sensations of falling and levitating. All of these same “symptoms” accompany the out of body state and could easily be confused with abduction scenarios.

There is the possibility that alien abductions do occur, but if we are not being physically visited by them, then they could be traversing the astral plane, similar to our consciousness, for the purpose of testing and experimenting in the astral environment. I know I just moved into a whole other level of strangeness with that last sentence :) but it is a possibility; one that I believe is more feasible than physical abductions because it allows for a stealth element that cannot be afforded through physical kidnappings.

The one constant among all reported sightings of anomalies is the disappearance factor. Whether it’s abominable snowmen, UFOs, fairies, the Jersey Devil or skunk apes, they all have the ability to be there one moment and gone the next, without leaving much of a physical trace. Perhaps our thoughts play a bigger role in what we see, smell, taste, hear and touch than we believe. If we are in fact creating our reality, moment by moment (like I believe we are) then maybe hallucinations should no longer be ridiculed or laughed at. Hallucinations may be indicators of a high volume of concentrated powerful thought that is being interpreted by the consciousness of the perceiver(s) of the hallucination. These hallucinations are either not capable of reaching full manifestation on the earth plane or else they exist on other planes of consciousness, only to show themselves as thoughts with the capability of displaying partial physical attributes here on earth.

How Conscious are Ghosts?

July 20th, 2007 by John Wolfe

It’s 11:30 P.M. The instant your head touches down on the pillow you feel a surge of relaxation come over your tired body. Between the coolness of the sheets and each individual muscle unwinding, you begin to lose consciousness. Your awareness of the gentle sound of rain drops tapping against the window pane fades into silence. Then it happens: the unmistakable sound of someone walking the staircase sends you reeling out of bed. Each creaking floorboard rings out like a shriek; you pause to get your bearings, analyzing the noise. Soon the steps release another groan. Peering into the darkness you wait, mind racing with fragmented thoughts- Someone is in the house! Impossible, I would have heard them trying to get in. What the hell is causing that sound?

The storm outside has intensified. Lightning zigs and zags, etching its way across the black sky, sending bright flashes of light flooding in through your bedroom window. That’s when you notice an ominous shadow next to your own, creeping across the wall, immediately in front of you. Your head spins around to find the source of this presence, fearing what may be lurking over your shoulder- no one’s there. Jerking it back towards the last place you saw the shadow; you come face to face with a translucent image of a woman, dressed in Victorian style attire, screaming your name. She stares a hole right through you, aware and very consumed with your presence. Frozen in terror, you slam your eyes shut…waiting. Five agonizing minutes pass. Mustering up the courage to again try and view your surroundings, you peer through tightly clamped eyelids. Shards of lightning slash through the night, illuminating your room, which is now completely empty of any presence but your own.

The above scenario (if it were true) would probably be considered an intelligent haunt by most paranormal enthusiasts and ghost busters. Intelligent haunts are usually classified as having very obvious cognitive interactions with people. Residual haunts are classified as only images, which appear to be stuck in a loop with no awareness or interaction with anyone. I agree with these definitions, and it’s obvious that there are different styles and classifications of hauntings, but to what extent are any of these ghosts truly conscious?

It’s a pretty common belief that most spirits are entities that were once physically focused, yet they are apparently now hung up in some sort of limbo state. The more I’ve thought about this concept, over the years, the less I tend to view ghosts in this manner. I feel that when we pass on, we come back into contact with our energy source. While there may be other options for us, the most appealing one is to come into the amazing awareness of how fantastic we are, basking in pure consciousness- similar to the death experience I described in Making the Death Transition. It’s the equivalent of a pulling sensation, drawing us into the aspect of consciousness that fuels our existence. However I don’t believe there is an actual journey to be made. While dying may take time, death is truly instantaneous. I feel you cannot get lost when making the death transition because there is no destination or separation from anything; those are all illusions created by the worrisome human mind.

So, if we do “assimilate” back into our own source awareness once we die, then what is it that continues to hang around the physical plane, in the form of ghosts? I’ve explored a few options to try and answer this in Specters, Spirits and Time, but I’m always working on expanding ideas and ways of interpreting these types of phenomenon. For example: What if our energy leaves a trail? What if it’s similar to watching someone move a laser pointer or other bright light source extremely fast? If it’s done quick enough your eye can’t catch up to the actual location of the source of the light trail- you can only see circular rings from the last place it was located. I believe the main portion of our consciousness always makes its phase shift, away from the physical plane, every time someone passes on. The portion of consciousness, which we identify with, never hangs around this environment once the physical vehicle is deceased, however there may be lingering trails off of our energy that still identify with our last physical body. So, in theory it’s possible to be fully withdrawn from the physical plane after we die, yet be a ghost at the same time.

The theory I’m describing may sound more like a residual type haunt. But maybe even intelligent haunts are more residual than they are intelligent. What if there is enough of our energy leftover (trailing behind us), after we pass, that it has a semblance of intelligence but it is not truly conscious? This could be similar to some form of artificial intelligence. Seemingly it can interact with things and people, but it’s not actually the true conscious source of the individual which has passed. If this is the case, then every person that is now physically focused has the potential for a small portion of their energy to become a ghost once they die.

These ideas could even explain why ghost hunters always talk about spirits draining energy from power sources, such as batteries, electronics and even people. If the spirits were full energy flowing conscious entities, then they shouldn’t need to draw extra energy. They would be a powerhouse of energy on their own.

Some ghosts seem to hang around environments, such as castles, for hundreds if not thousand of years. Why would a small trail of energy hang around this long? Time is only a human concept, not a law that extends into the afterlife. Thousands of physical years can pass in an instant (to our awareness) after we make the death transition.

While I know I’m not proving or disproving anything, scientifically or otherwise with this post, I do enjoy pondering these types of occurrences to try and make some sense out of ghostly phenomenon. Hauntings and evidence of spirits have been collected for many years and even though technology continues to improve, we are still not much closer to understanding these events. Perhaps there are some things that science will never truly understand or prove. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist, nor should we ever forfeit our own personal pursuits for more knowledge.
