Great Jack-O-Lantern Blaze

January 22nd, 2010 by John Wolfe

The Great Jack-O-Lantern Blaze is an incredible display in New York’s Hudson Valley, containing thousands of carved pumpkins and “Funkins” (synthetic carvable pumpkins).

Man, they have some cool Halloween attractions throughout the Northeast! I used to live back there as a kid, but as an adult who’s lived in the Desert Southwest for almost twenty-years, I’ve forgotten just how gussied up that region gets for fall.

Halloween Improv

January 21st, 2010 by John Wolfe

Recently, I’ve developed an affinity for watching vids where people excel in very abnormal, awkward social situations. Perhaps this is because I feel like an inept dufus in most typical social settings. So, it’s great to see others who thrive off of the tension created by exaggerating normal social scenes.

After watching some of YT user, ImprovEverywhere’s collection, I’d have to say it doesn’t get much more socially awkward than the scenarios they invent. In a nutshell, they’re a group of “actors” who live for (kindly) creating controversy and humorous situations in public places.

This first vid incorporates Halloween into an unlikely location: the New York subway system. As you may have already guessed, the actors are the ones wearing the costumes:

This next one isn’t Halloween related, but it is one of my favorites from their “missions,” as they like to call them:

These guys remind me of an old co-worker. In fact, he would have fit in perfectly with their troupe. The man used to wear a Santa Claus stocking cap to movie theaters in the middle of summer.

Just like ImprovEverywhere, he didn’t give a damn what anyone thought about him (no matter what he was doing). And, I admire him and the IE group for that.
