9-9-09: Spirit Halloween
September 10th, 2009 by John Wolfe
There couldn’t have been a more appropriate day for me to visit my favorite Halloween store than yesterday. Numerically speaking, the date was completely aligned and so was I as I walked the aisles – like a kid in a candy shop! Many new props were out and about, while plenty of familiar ghouls were making revamped, return appearances. For example, last year’s main grounbreaker prop has turned into a headless wonder.
The last few seasons, I’ve also noticed certain items becoming trendy in the world of Halloween retail. A year or so ago, it was the animated crystal balls, complete with a talking fortune teller’s head stuffed inside. This year, the hot ticket appears to be evil babies and demonic toddlers. Maybe that’s what parents mean when they talk about their child going through the “terrible twos!”
As far as animated props go, this witch and Michael Myers (not pictured) were my favorites. Spirit has added a female vampire, an executioner and a revamped Hannibal Lecter (from last year) to their ’09 animatronic lineup. I’m in the process of working on editing the video I shot yesterday, so hopefully you’ll see these guys in action in another day or so.
If you’re in the Albuquerque area and are wanting to visit the Spirit Halloween Stores, you’ll find them conveniently located in the same shopping centers as last year. On the east side of town, they can be found at 4610 Cutler Avenue, NE (505) 872-2786 and at 1221 South Renaissance Blvd. NE (505) 344-2556. And on the west side, Spirit is in the Alameda West Shopping Center at 10131 North Coors Blvd, near the Cottonwood Mall, (505) 897-1057.
The staff at all three locations are awesome! Be sure to tell them Season of Shadows sent you.

Oh boy! My best buddy/ghost hunting partner and I are hitting the shop next Wednesday on my day off for a totally Halloween-themed day. We’ll probably spend a lot of time going over every item, stop and have lunch, then come back and buy what we decided on during our lunch discussion. We help keep each other from going too overboard and buying everything. I finally got the point that, if it’s not a haunted house theme, I won’t collect it. That’s a huge step for someone who wants to hoard Halloween!

That sounds like my kind of day! I’m in the process of planning as many “Halloween Days” over the course of September and October as possible and documenting the majority of it. I’d really like to film video footage of the pro haunts in Albuquerque, but they don’t return my calls.
Oh well.
