A Bumper Crop of Halloween Ambiance

September 15th, 2008 by John Wolfe

There’s a tremendous corn field about four miles from my house. Yesterday, I felt the urge to grab my camera and soak up its atmosphere. Corn fields always put me in the Halloween spirit; especially after spending many, many hours preparing the stalks in my haunt last year. Corn literally became the only focus of my life the week prior to October 31st.

Now, I’m not sure how many acres this field covers, but it has to be at least fifteen plus. Almost every single plant was between seven and ten feet high- just an incredible place with stalks as far as the eye could see. The sun began going down as I was walking the dirt roads in between the fields. The darker it got, the more I caught myself looking over my shoulder. :)

Years ago, I heard that Steven King consistently scared himself because of the stories he wrote. Maybe the same is true of most Halloween haunters. When you spend a lot of time surrounded by creepy things and spooky atmosphere, the right conditions can put you on edge, but man, that’s what I love about Halloween!
