A Jolly Halloween

August 28th, 2011 by John Wolfe

I found this cool Halloween popcorn tin at my grandparents’ house a few weeks ago, and just knew it was destined to be blogged about. The can is decorated with old postcard images on all sides. When I first came across it, I almost placed a call to the Halloween police, ’cause my grandma had been using it to store Easter decorations inside. That’s gotta be considered breaking the law where most Halloween fanatics are concerned. ;)

You gotta’ love those vintage postcard pictures. Nothing says “Halloween” more than a bit of Memory Lane nostalgia.

What a charming tin. I wonder how old it is…

Halloween blasphemy, indeed. Hahah. Very cool popcorn tin, though. VERY cool.

It’s beautiful! At least she saved it.

That’s great. I love vintage Halloween! Some of my Halloween things are stored in a Halloween themed popcorn tin as well. I got it from the Popcorn Factory, it has a modern/retro Halloween style, with the crazy looking cat and pumpkin faces, cartoony spiders and minimalist skulls and is very colorful. Right up my Halloween alley. Yes, it is quite bizarre to store Easter stuff in a Halloween tin!

    Paul Melniczek,

I agree. The creativity by the artists around the turn of the century is awesome.

    Damian,

I don’t think the tin is more than ten or so years old, but I’m thinking the images they used on it have to be from around the early 1900s. I call them vintage, but they’re almost antiques.

    Doug,

LOL! I was wondering if someone was going to comment on the Easter/Halloween thing. :)

    Amanda,

Thank you for checking it out and commenting.

    trickortreat,

Absolutely! Great to hear from you.

    Brian,

That sounds like an awesome tin, too! I don’t think we have a Popcorn Factory here in New Mexico. With Halloween so close, I’ll have to see if I can find some more tins like that, maybe so I can store Christmas stuff inside. ;)

Nice find! Even with the Easter decorations. :)

LOL! Storing Easter inside Halloween tins is absolutely something my grandmother would have done! She had a little closet with shelves for all her holiday decorations and there was often bleed-over from one holiday shelf to another and a little dark haired granddaughter who used to love to play with all those goodies and mix them up! Thank you for this post and for reminding me about that wonderful memory! I feel like I can still smell what that closet smelled like, Christmas candles, new packs of bicycle playing cards, potpourri, the cardboard and ink smell of the Halloween cat, skeleton and pumpkin cut-out decorations, left over Easter jelly beans..etc.. :)

    Camile,

That’s an awesome memory! Thank you so much for sharing it, my friend. I love the image you painted of the holiday closet. That’s one of those feel-good, snuggly, warm and cozy memories from childhood that are so great to think about and hear about!
