Alice, Sweet Alice
August 2nd, 2011 by John Wolfe
Last year, when Ethan Black was super generous in giving some of his Halloween artwork to Season of Shadows for a giveaway, he went above and beyond by presenting me with his original, amazing zombie piece, called “Alice.” For a year, I’d been drooling over a pic of Alice the way most men slobber over a centerfold model. Ethan eventually got wind of my infatuation with his zombie-ette (I think that’s the politically correct term for a female zombie), and slipped her into the giveaway goodie box without my knowing it. One of the best surprises I’ve ever received; there was all this great artwork waiting to be given to SoS visitors and mixed in with it was a note from Ethan saying Alice was all mine — talk about being bowled over!
It’s just such a great piece — hands down my all-time favorite when it comes to graveyard, zombie-corpse artwork. Looks as if it jumped right out of the pages of a wonderful old dark, comic magazine like “Creepy” or “Eerie!” I have plans to one day get some Season of Shadows t-shirts printed with Alice gracing the front, though Ethan has tried to talk me out of using the image, because the t-shirt would have to be a non-spooky white color. Sorry, Ethan, but I still have tunnel vision when it comes to having “her” incredible image represent SoS clothing
— even if the shirts are white and just a limited printing as giveaways to all the great folks who visit regularly.
What can I say, I’m obsessed with Alice. Anyway, for now, she sits framed, overlooking my desk, until I can get her displayed on the threads of my willing visitors.
If you haven’t swung by yet, be sure and checkout Ethan’s cool, new blog.
Also, if you’re a fan of old horror films, you’ll recognize my word play in today’s post title. A bit of trivia: The movie, Alice, Sweet Alice, dates back to 1976 and was one of Brooke Shields first films.

How inspiring and what an awesome artist! I love when art just sings to you. That doesn’t sing, it does opera!

I’d buy an SoS shirt in an undead heartbeat! Even fast than that if it had such an, err, *lovely* lass on it!

autumnforest,
Opera’s right, my friend. Alice really belts it out.
Damian,
Thanks, man. I appreciate your support! I’m wanting to go all out and make it a glow-in-the-dark t-shirt as well!
Lovely, eh? I couldn’t agree more — as they say, it’s all in the eye of the beholder.

Glow in the dark Alice???!!?? Seriously?!? That would be soooo cool!!! The image is amazing! Fantastic work, Ethan! I love your stuff! But to take it as an idea and make it glow in the dark- John, you are fantastic!! I think you should be sainted- John Wolfe, patron saint of Halloween!!

Very cool that he did that! And thank you for sharing it with the rest of us! I agree his work is fantastic. Being a big fan of Creepy, his work is just up my alley. Thanks for sharing the blog link. You are the best!
Cheers!

Camile,
Absolutely. I’d love to make her glow. I discussed the technique a while ago with a local graphic arts/t-shirt shop and it’s very do-able. Right now, I’m still focusing on getting things in a more stable place with my health and all the financial aspects that go with that: doctor bills, meds, etc. But getting the t-shirts printed is going to be one of my first priorities once I feel like I’m on more level ground again. Posting Alice in this entry and reading the responses from you guys has definitely inspired me to get the ball rolling on the shirts and to tackle the project all out. Plus, Goldie’s been wanting me to get her a shirt for quite a while now, too.
Thanks for the Halloween patron saint nomination, my friend, but I probably barely qualify to be the guy who cleans and polishes the pews.
The Frog Queen,
It’s my pleasure to post. I’m so glad you enjoyed seeing Ethan’s work. It is amazing! Thank you, as always, for your kind comment.

Did you intentionally post this on my birthday? If not, what an odd coincidence. I am always pleased when other people enjoy my work. It makes me feel inspired and recharges me when I am stating to drag my feet. You are all a wonderful online community and I am grateful that I found you. John, if it were not for you none of us would have this opportunity to interact. Thank you sir. I have something new to show all of you in October and it is in a whole other (yet still Halloween) direction.

To John Wolfe – patron saint of Halloween (this was GREAT Camile!!!)
My God, I was reminded once more of this stunning artwork by Ethan. His work truly goes beyond anything I’ve ever laid my eyes on and Alice has always been in my top 3 works of art by him. You and I have some history regarding everything mentioned in the post so you already know, and have felt, my enthusiasm for Ethan’s Alice being displayed on your soon-to-be T-shirts. I agree my friend, you really don’t want to much wording on the t-shirts because it would distract from the masterpiece Ethan created. However, you do want your website known as well so keeping it simple is key.
Alice looks perfect in the frame and looks like it should be hanging in a Halloween museum somewhere. You’ve done it great justice with this simple, yet elegant black frame. I forgot how stunning this piece was. I’ve been excited about the t-shirts for a couple of years now and I know that when the timing is just right to tackle making the t-shirts, then you’ll have them available for us to gobble up…..and sleep in, go to work in, go to the gym in, shower in………lol. If your t-shirts are anything like my black organic “peace” t-shirt, the SoS t-shirt would hardly ever leave my body
Thank you for sharing how this looks and I love Camile’s new title for you. It’s most appropriate my friend. I hope your doing well and that your health continues to strengthen. Get on that vitamin D as soon as you can!!! @}–}—}—}—————-

Ethan Black,
I wish I could say that was the case, man, but to be honest it was just a cool coincidence. I know you told me about your August 2nd birthday last year, maybe somewhere it stored in my subconscious. Either way, happy belated birthday! Hope you had a great one and I’m glad this entry happened to be posted on your special day!
Thank you, too, Ethan, for your kindness and support of this site. Likewise, all of you guys keep me inspired to help SoS be a little better (hopefully) than it was the day before. Even if I don’t get anything accomplished for my haunt, my priority is always Season of Shadows and doing my best to give back to the great group of folks who enjoy gathering here. You guys make this site what it is – not me.
I’m sooo looking forward to your new creation. I always find inspiration in all of your artwork! Please keep us posted.
Goldie,
Don’t you mean: To John Wolfe – pew polisher? The word pew always sounds dirty, even though it’s just church benches.
Yeah, a spooky font… maybe in vertical letters running parallel to Alice would probably do it. I’ll have to get them to play with the lettering and see what works best. It needs a balance between having Alice still be the eye candy, but also making SeasonOfShadows.com “pop” as well.
Glad you like the frame. Ethan’s artwork had just enough white in it that the black and white matte seems to work well with the image, too. LOL, that’s a new one — to shower in!? Hey, whatever you want to do with it once it’s on your back is up to you, just as long as the shirt gets lots of exposure in public, especially near Halloween.
Thanks for the well wishes. Everything is coming together health-wise. I’m approaching this from about three angles, the third will be getting put in motion by the end of this month. Already I’m starting to feel stronger and I believe it will get better when I get going on this next step I’m working on.
I wish you well in everything, especially the exciting new changes you’re going through right now.

ssflipo13,
I’ll definitely let you know about the t-shirts, my friend. It will still be a while before I pursue it. I’m going to wait until after Halloween, and then I’ll start working on getting in touch with a few more professional print shops in town. I visited one several months ago, but there’s another I have in mind, too. I really want to go by in person with a copy of Alice so we can discuss what I want to achieve with the shirts.
