An Old-Fashioned Hallowe’en
March 6th, 2010 by John WolfeAn amazing collection of vintage and antique photos and postcards accompany some haunting Celtic stylings in this old-fashioned Halloween vid by YT user, ZombieStomper4.
Unfortunately, ZombieStomper4 didn’t provide information as to where these images came from. However, I happen to know a few of the Halloween postcards are from Flickr user, riptheskull’s collection. And several of the old photographs came from another Flickr user, stevechasmar.
If anyone knows the source(s) for the remaining images, please let me know.

All of those are awesome, but some are really spooky looking because of the age of the photos and quality. Looks like something you’d see at the beginning of “Darkness Falls” or “Dead Silence.” Great find!

I absolutely love vintage Halloween cards/photos. The music was great in this video, also. Thanks for sharing!

autumnforest,
Oh yeah, I know what you mean. I’d say several in the group are antiques–they just look like they’re at least one-hundred-years old, if not older. Those are the really spooky looking ones!
Dr. Necropolis,
It’s my pleasure. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I share your fascination and enjoyment of these old images. It’s really interesting to see how the celebration of Halloween has changed throughout the last several decades, but in some ways it’s still exactly the same.

My favorites are also the really old ones. The music works well with the old photography. Good one.

That was cool. Now why haven’t I thought to look that up on youtube?
See what I mean
It’s interesting how simple those costumes were and yet they seemed to look extra spooky to me, almost like a darkness about them. I also enjoyed to see the imagination at work back in the days where now there are billions of costumes which are store bought. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great ones out there but NOTHING beats the mind of the imagination. Just ask those kids who approached our front door during Halloween night in 1977 and could swear, even calling out to their moms, that Princess Leia was standing in somebody’s living room
Imagination….can’t speak enough about it! Nice find John and that photo of the kid holding the human head was an eye catcher for sure….yikes!

frightnight,
Thanks. I, too, enjoyed the music. Until finding this video, I had never heard of the singer before (her name escapes me at the moment).
Goldie,
Definitely! Store-bought costumes are fine, but nothing beats the combination of the imagination and homemade Halloween gear. Best I can surmise from those old photos, the costumes back then were based more on themes as opposed to specific identifiable characters; nowadays, it’s just the opposite–everything is a character and there’s not much in the way of themes in costumes. A lot of that, I’m guessing, has to do with the fact we live in an age of product branding. Seventy-five or one-hundred-years ago, there were marketing campaigns and slogans, but it was nowhere near the height of today.
That Leia costume must have been something else! Thanks, Goldie.

The singer is Loreena McKennit, the song is ALL SOULS NIGHT> from the album THE VISIT. I am a huge fan

Thanks, Ethan. After hearing Loreena’s voice in this video, I’m quickly becoming a fan as well.
