Blast From Halloween Past
December 28th, 2009 by John WolfeI found another blast from my Halloween past on YT today. User, DragonFlyEnt recently uploaded the 1970′s commercial for “Goofy Gold.” When I begged my parents to buy this 8-track off of the television spot, my version also contained horror sounds — all the typical stuff you would expect to hear playing during a yard haunt. It was quite the combination; novelty songs, interspersed with “sounds of terror.”
While I absolutely remember a version of this commercial, the above spot seems to be the predecessor to my Halloween copy of Goofy Gold. I wish I still had that 8-track, but I’m sure it eventually got tossed. It’s little wonder, considering I listened to that album every morning before school for weeks at a time. It probably fell apart.

Oh my heavens, I soooooo remember those songs, just about all of them too. Bro and I would play the record usually on the weekend or after school sometime but we never had the 8 track. Mom was more of a record person than tape. I can also remember that song, “Ding-a-ling” and boy howdy how my brother and I would sing that song outloud and laugh up a storm through out. Ahhh, good memories~*~

Oh yeah, I remember “My Ding-A-Ling,” too! I think that was by Chuck Berry. My mom won an 8-track from a contest she had entered and on that 8-track ole Chuck was singing that song. I think I embarrassed my parents quite a bit while singing “My Ding-A-Ling!” As a four-year-old, I didn’t quite get the double meaning of the lyrics… LOL!
Do you remember this particular commercial for “Goofy Gold?”

You know, oddly enough I don’t remember the commercial at all; not a single bit! Even the name doesn’t ring a bell for me but, as mentioned, just about every one of those songs I totally remember which is where “My Ding-a-Ling” song memories came from. Bro knew exactly what it meant at around age 3 LoL.

Okay, I had an 8-track with a bunch of those, wonder if it was that one? I think my mom hid it because I’d make us play it in the car on road trips. Wow, I’d forgotten all about that. Such memories. You make the greatest finds–very cool!

Oh yeah, I absolutely know this will be your favorite movie–made for TV 1972 takes place at Halloween and has all the trappings of a true 1970s Halloween. I put it in every Halloween and am so excited. It’s like the school carnival, the feelings, and campiness. It was called “When Michael Calls” when it was on TV and changed its named to “Shattered Silence” with a young Michael Douglas.

I saw Chuck Berry sing it in person in the early 70′s at the Troubadour in Hollywood. Average White Band was the other venue. There’s a combo for ya. lol
He’s a real funny one on stage.
John, I know every single one of those songs in that video by heart. That’s scary and I’m old. lol
Monster Mash has great meaning for me since I think that’s my daily life, which I won’t get into right now.
My sister and I were trying out for the school’s talent show and we were going to pantomime Monster Mash. I was in 4th and my sister was in 2nd grade. Anyway, we qualified and upon leaving the gymnasium (being a kid) I threw the record up in the air to catch it and it broke on the gym floor. Consequently we weren’t able to do the talent show since “I broke the record”. A little bit of synchronicity there that you won’t understand for a while but will some day.

Goldie,
Your brother was definitely more “in the know” than I was at that age.
I could tell you some other stories about songs I sang innocently enough during the 70′s (a Hall and Oates tune immediately comes to mind), which were embarrassing to my parents.
autumnforest,
Back then, they always seemed to be making some new incarnation of novelty song collections. “Goofy Gold” happened to be the one I gravitated towards, until the 80′s and then I found a cassette called “Kooky Country.” The only thing lacking on it was the spooky sounds. I guess they didn’t think Halloween music blended very well with novelty country songs.
Thanks for the link! I don’t remember that one, but I’m headed over to YT to check it out now. Funny, I just saw Michael Douglas on Regis and Kelly this morning. The older he gets, the more he looks exactly like his father.
Atrueoriginall,
I bet that was a ton of fun! I never got to see Chuck in person, but I’ve heard him and watched him play live performances on tape and video. He’s an awesome entertainer and definitely knows how to engage and work the audience.
There’s no way you’re old ’cause I know all those songs, too. Wait a minute, maybe that means I’m getting old as well.
Thanks for sharing your Monster Mash experience. I feel for you on that one, especially after working hard and no doubt being excited you qualified for the show. Hope the “Monster Mash” in your daily life is not too bad.
