I’m absolutely going to continue my work at Season of Shadows (and Wind of the Soul), however, I’ll be scaling back my work hours. Because of this, the Jack-O-Lantern a Day project will be changed. I’ll keep creating jack-o-lanterns but at my own pace, maybe two or three times per week. On a related note, I’d like to thank Paranormal Casebook and Pumpkinrot for their recent support of the Jack-O-Lantern a Day project. Both sites have been really kind when it comes to promoting a wide variety of my work and I can’t thank them enough.

So, I was digging around in the garage this afternoon and came across the old, dirty air filter which is serving as the canvas for today’s jack-o-lantern entry. I fanned it out to draw the image and then collapsed it accordion-style for the photo. Creating a jack-o-lantern on an air filter is a lot more fun than changing it out on my vehicle.

Baking soda didn’t make for the easiest substance to draw in, but it didn’t turn out too bad. The jack-o-lantern eyes and mouth were “hollowed out” using a wet toothpick. What I’m enjoying most about the Jack-O-Lantern a Day project is the wide variety of materials I’m using to create the pumpkins. Some are much easier to work with than others, but all in all it’s extremely fun. Not to mention, I’m getting a lot of practice drawing faces. I should be in good shape come October.

Today’s jack-o-lantern was created using duct tape. Because of my groundbreaker corpses and fixing other yard haunt odds and ends, duct tape is never in short supply around my house. I created the general shape of the jack-o-lantern body, eyes, mouth and stem on the concrete floor and then cut in the details using a razor blade.

I already used chalk for a previous jack-o-lantern, but this time the image wasn’t created from piling up the dust. I wish I knew what chalk colors I used in today’s pumpkin, but being color blind and using art supplies minus the labels doesn’t mix too well. While I can see color, most of the time I can’t identify it. That’s one of the tricky things about taking on this project, so if you guys happen to see pumpkins with funky colors, you’ll know why.

Today’s entry is being posted just after midnight. This jack-o-lantern took about four hours to complete, so I ‘m running a little behind in getting it up. The entire pumpkin was created using a mosaic style of hundreds of individual pieces of construction paper. So far, it seems paper and food items are emerging as my most consistently used materials in the “jack-a-day” project.

I was very impressed at how easy it was carving the honeydew for today’s jack-o-lantern. While I’ve eaten honeydew many times, I’ve never sliced a face into one. There’s minimal slime and seeds inside, and the knife went through it like hot butter – so much easier than carving a pumpkin. With that being said, I still don’t see honeydew sitting in my yard haunt’s graveyard come Halloween night.

Found a really cool technique on You Tube for making origami jack-o-lanterns. Big thanks to Seven2One for posting the Halloween how-to. It took about thirty minutes to get the folds just right on my practice jack-o-lantern. The second one (pictured) went a lot faster. Normally, I venture further into the spooky when I’m in full Halloween prep mode. But I love this little guy so much – I may make a whole patch (come October) for the dining room table.

This box of brown rice was supposed to be used by December 2006. I’m only twenty-six and a half months over the expiration date. Anytime I use food to create my jack-o-lanterns, I do my best to find old, expired stuff to prevent waste. The apple jack-o-lantern was an exception, but I did eat the apple after carving it. This project serves a dual purpose: I get to create and clean out my kitchen at the same time.

A few weeks ago, I wrote an entry for pumpkin oatmeal. Today’s jack-o-lantern brings new meaning to that post. I created this pumpkin from two cups of cooked oatmeal. The body and stem were shaped by hand and the mouth and eyes were cut with a knife. With the right ingredients, this same concept could be applied to making a giant, jack-o-lantern, oatmeal cookie.
