Classic Horror Show Intros
May 27th, 2011 by John WolfePaul, an awesome online friend and visitor to SoS sent me an e-mail a few days ago suggesting I look for YT vids of old Saturday morning/night horror TV hosts, specifically one near and dear to his heart, Dr. Shock out of Philadelphia. Having never heard of Dr. Shock, I knew I had to see this!
The following vids all feature classic intros from horror programming during the ’60s and ’70s. Thanks for the great suggestion, Paul!
Up first, a partial Dr. Shock intro (apparently not a lot survives from his film vault):

Thank you Paul!!! Those were awesome and reminds me a lot of the “This” channels new Tuesday line-up which is called “Terror Tuesdays.” All day and night long they play the classic horror movies, which John can confirm I’m a huge fan of. These clips were right up my alley and I wish would be added to the “This” line-up on Tuesdays. However I shall browse online this weekend and see if some of the films are online. Thank you for sharing Paul and thank you Mr. Wolfe for hunting these down and posting them.
I’m better at one hand typing than I thought with holding a 5 month old baby girl
I hope everyone has a nice 3 day weekend

Goldie,
I think that’s a great idea! It would be awesome if THIS would show some of these old horror host intros prior to their movies. That would be an amazing nostalgic touch. It would be even cooler if they would also devote some of the commercial segments to commercials that were playing in the ’60s when these old programs were on the air.
It was my pleasure, Goldie. Once Paul suggested it, I was very happy to start doing my thing on YT. Thank you for watching and commenting. And you’re right, that is some pretty snazzy typing. You’re a good multi-tasker.

Damn! I love this!!! Oh the memories! I used to put on Chiller and my mom, if she heard the sound of it, would yell “you know you’ll never sleep tonight!” I’d take my sister’s little B&W portable TV into the library and watch it with a huge row of windows to my back. One time, my brother knocked on the window and I about wet myself! Thanks for the memories. I think with your amazing voice, you need to be doing some DIY vids on YouTube. You’d be a sensation. Do things that can be done in under 5 minutes and they’ll adore you.

Ahh great, but you can’t forget Bill (Chilly Billy) Cardille of Pittsburgh’s WPXI and “The Night of the Living Dead” fame. Great, fun day’s of long ago.

autumnforest,
Considering the house you grew up in, I don’t think you needed to watch Chiller — you guys already had enough spooky stuff going on.
Thanks for sharing. I love hearing personal stories like yours. It’s awesome how vids like these can so quickly bring back childhood, especially for those of us who enjoyed creepy things as kids.
Thanks for your kind support about my voice and doing DIY vids! That’s a great idea. The Haunter’s Reality videos were my first trek down that path and I’m still planning on doing a full how-to from start to finish on building a groundbreaker. Of course that won’t be anywhere near five minutes… more like five hundred minutes.
The Limb Reaper,
Welcome to the site! Funny you should mention Chilly Billy, I saw a few vids today of his show too. One of the ones I watched included a “Get Smart” type bit in it.

There are some great horror hosts out there. Currently Penny Dreadful is one of the best. She is so sweet. Her husband is a great guy as well. I have been in contact with them for a few years. I also had the opportunity to spend the day at Louisville zoo with Americas first horror host John Zacherle (aka Roland). He was a hoot. When I asked if he wanted to go see the spiders he didn’t miss a beat, he replied. “No, no, I have already eaten.” A great day to say the least. I also worked on Nashville’s local Creature Feature for a few years. One day I would love to create an animated horror host.
(I have added youtube addresses for them.)

Brought back some memories!! Gives me flashbacks to me hiding under a cover peaking through a hole just so I could see the TV and nothing else. I guess I felt safer if I was under a thin piece of cloth.
My favorites growing up: Creepshow- Hitchhiker- Twilight Zone- Alfred Hitchcock-I think I was even scared of Scooby Doo when I was younger. Thanks for time shift!

Ethan,
Thanks, man, for sharing and for including those url’s. I’ll be sure to check ‘em out. I’m a YT junkie for Halloween and spooky stuff. In fact, when it comes to my time online, I pretty much divide it entirely between working on SoS and looking around on YT. While I’ve never met or hung out with any horror hosts, it seems in general the horror/ haunt/Halloween enthusiast community is full of lots of great folks!
With your talent, Ethan, I’m sure anything you work on in the arena of spooky stuff would be a great success!
ssflipo13,
Glad you can remember having some horror hosts in your area as a kid. I was a military brat and we moved around a lot during my childhood, but I can’t remember ever living in a location as a kid that actually had its own horror host. Elvira was syndicated during the mid ’80s and she’s about the only one I can recall.
Scary Visions,
LoL! I used to do that too with the bed covers. Mine wasn’t actually while watching something scary, though. I used to do it after going to bed. The night would start out okay, but by around the time the house got completely quiet, I was usually scared and would cover up my entire body (including my head) with blankets. I could sleep like that just fine. Guess I felt safer that way.

Dr. Shock was a really cool host. I remember watching it out of channel 17 in Philadelphia when I was a kid. Monster movies, and great shows like ULTRAMAN. Thanks to the internet and rare footage, we can keep the memories alive. I know they recorded over most the episodes, which is a terrible shame. John, thanks again for posting this and keeping the “friendly” nightmares alive!
