Cornstalks for the Haunt

October 1st, 2008 by John Wolfe

Yesterday, I made the trip to Wagner’s Farms in Corrales, New Mexico. They’ve become my annual Halloween, cornstalk supply house. Every September, Corrales has a festival featuring a corn maze. Wagner’s, then sells a large volume of the excess stalks, from the maze, to the public. My grandfather and I took his truck and loaded it with twelve bundles. Each bundle averages thirty stalks, so I’m looking at roughly 360. That comes out to sixty more stalks than last Halloween.

Now, the securing process can begin. I use liquid nails and fishing line (crazy combination, I know) to secure the stalks to the temporary display fence. The fishing line holds each one in place until the “glue” can dry. I’ll adhere about three quarters of the corn, and then lean the rest against the display on the afternoon of Halloween. So, if anybody has a few spare hours to sleep this month – snooze a little extra for me, please! :)

In all honesty, there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing in this moment in time- even if it means running on four hours sleep a night for the rest of the month. When October and Halloween come around, I’m like a gambler in Vegas; I operate on minimal sleep to savor every moment. ;)
