Creepy Forest
March 9th, 2010 by John WolfeDesolate, wooded areas, in the throws of winter, always inspire my imagination. There’s something stunningly haunting about forests, especially on overcast days, when naked, gnarled tree branches jut across the backdrop of foreboding clouds–looking like sharp fingernails poised to scratch an immense blackboard in the sky.
As I’ve spent time walking along the Bosque (meaning woods or forest in Spanish), here in New Mexico, I always do my best to take a mental snapshot of the spooky imagery. Then, I try to infuse the feelings that imagery evokes into the creative process of making my props and setting up my yard haunt.
Just in case you don’t live near any creepy woods or happen to have access to the Bosque, YT user, oRisinai has created some footage that will bring those locations to you. Though it’s very short and has no plot or major storyline, the vid does a great job of capturing the haunting atmosphere and ambiance I love about woods and forests.

Forest DO seem to take on a much different energy at night be it full moon or not. I can think of countless of “horror” movies in which much of the setting was in the woods, the mountains surrounded by dark creepy trees. I can also recall plenty of movies where the trees come to life and either eat the person or hold them down from leaving.
Yet again where I’m the oddball, I have a certain love affair with trees and though they do look very spooky at night, I’m much to appreciative to who they are and the many purposes they serve on Earth. In fact I was going over one of my favorite videos today where all of the visuals are of the full moon, the dark sky, fog in some spots and black trees everywhere and I find comfort again. LoL I just love how for most such a scene would scare them right back to church but for me, as with you I’m sure, we feel most relaxed by such visuals…if not on the verge of an afternoon nap
The video was cool. Animation has come so far these days. It’s just amazing what can be done with CGI. Nice find John, as always.

Goldie,
Your comment reminded me of the scene in “The Wizard of Oz” where the tree (or is it trees, I can’t remember) comes to life. That’s the first film I can recall where Hollywood gave trees personification and attributes of being more human-like.
I’m so comfortable with the visuals you mentioned, but I’m usually more stimulated by seeing stuff like fog, a full moon, dark forests, etc. than I am relaxed. Those things get me excited for Halloween and prop building.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
autumnforest,
I sure can. It’s a great name!

Creepy woods. I grew up in the country and enjoye dmany walks in the woods behind my house. Some of the trees were very old and the roots were massive. I would play on the or just sit and read all the time. Ah, the good old days.

That sounds like an amazing place to grow-up, Ethan! I love it when huge, thick tree roots poke out from under the ground.
