Creepy

April 13th, 2010 by John Wolfe

Some beautiful stop motion work and set design can be found in this promo for the relaunch of the old “CREEPY” magazine. I’m in love with the cemetery backdrop in this spot–totally awesome! I’d like to eventually build my own permanent cemetery modeled after this one–it would be an incredible place for photographing my props. Some people dream of building zen gardens and water features on their property–I, on the other hand, aspire to building a Gothic-looking cemetery.

Speaking of Creepy magazine, I so remember reading it as a kid, along with EERIE and Vampirella. As a boy, I always thought I was fooling my parents into believing I solely enjoyed reading Vampirella for the spooky stuff, but something tells me they knew better than that. Those of you that remember the Vampirella artwork know what I’m talking about.

I’m so inspired. I’m going out tomorrow to search for the fencing for my graveyard. You know, after seeing that, I think you need to grow a tree and then kill it and hang fake moss (stained cheesecloth) from it like Spanish moss. I’m dying to get to work on the headstones for my cemetery. I thought I might put some famous folks who I admired for the names like Dylan Thomas and Thor Heyerdahl.

Love it. Reminded me of the Tales From the Crypt intro for some reason. The music, setting, even Uncle Creepy all brought back memories of watching that show as a kid. The Creepy video itself was fantastic.

    autumnforest,

Speaking of the tree–there’s this amazing, gnarly, dead tree in an old mining town a few hundred miles south of me that looks so wicked! Last time I was there, I tried rocking it back and forth and was able to move it, but it’s just too huge to load in the back of the truck. It’s a shame ’cause it would look so sweet in the haunt. That’s a great idea for creating Spanish moss and for your headstones! Aside from the crosses I use in my haunt, all of my headstones are styrofoam, but I want to eventually make some out of concrete or stone.

I wish you well in looking for your fencing!

    Dr. Necropolis,

I know what you mean, I was thinking about Tales From the Crypt while watching this, too! Thanks for checking it out and commenting.

oh, yes…what a completely awesome cemetery! I really liked the idea of ‘unlevel terrain’…the old stone stairs leading up to more graves…gotta think about this…thanks so much for sharing!

That’s what did it for me, too, Pam–the unevenness of it all, the texture and the the old steps! I know autumnforest is working on making her own permanent cemetery in a corner of her yard, so between her creation and this vid, I’ve been inspired to put this project on my vision board for creating in the near future.

You’re very welcome and thank you for watching and commenting.

Your voice would have made thee most perfect Uncle Creepy. You could easily get it deep and low and all the more mysterious by talking nice and slow like Uncle Creepy did!!! Your voice would be AWESOME for something like this and 1,000X more effective I might add ;-) I sure wouldn’t want to hear that scary voice on Halloween night……Eeeeeeeeeeeeekkkk!

The cemetery was totally kick ass, how incredible was that scene!!! I’ve gotta say between this quick look into the cemetery and the other one you favor overseas, (sorry forgot the name of it) the more torn down, old and uneven looking cemeteries really appeal to me. As much as I’m a huge fan of the OCC where I live, it is a cemetery that is well caught up, well groomed every Saturday and strikes a person as being a beautiful cemetery, which it is. However, just imagine if those 25,000 graves at the OCC were buried in a cemetery like that one. ;-)

Oh John, please do! If there is someway to make your yard haunt cemetery look more like what I’ve just seen, you would be pushing the envelope to a new uncomfortable notch for the kiddies. The fencing does seem to add to that element, does it not? Even things like your wooden crosses make your haunt seem more authentic. I still say it’s to bad you can’t drape yourself in an immense long black cape and hood….especially with your height! Oh well, maybe some year. This was a really cool video. I wish I could find a show that was like this all the way through for at least 30 minutes. Nice find my friend.

Thanks, Goldie, for the vote of confidence about voicing Uncle Creepy! Yeah, Highgate cemetery in London is incredible, especially when you consider it’s a real place. It looks to be more like a movie set than it does a cemetery. The OCC is definitely a peaceful location and though I’ve never been, it has such an amazing feel to it–it would be hard to imagine it resembling the set designed in this vid.

I don’t think I could ever make my yard haunt look like the cemetery in this video because there are too many elements that would almost need to be permanent. I doubt the neighbors would go for a permanent, decrepit cemetery display in the front yard. :D Also, there’s the issue of space in the front yard. However, I would love to build this permanently on my own property one day, once I move from my current neighborhood. It wouldn’t be anything trick-or-treaters would get to enjoy, but it would sure serve as a set for my prop photos for Season of Shadows.
