Gargoyles and Grotesques
January 10th, 2010 by John WolfeAlong with my interest in cemeteries, I’ve always had a fascination with stone carvings — gargoyles and grotesques (so-called because of their distorted facial features) to be exact. However, it’s not easy to find these ornate art forms in the desert southwest. Fortunately, I can live vicariously through vid makers who visit locations that are adorned with these spooky looking stone creatures.

Oh! I love these sooo much! One year, I bought a plastic “relief” of a gargoyle that you hang above your door. I so loved it that I took plaster of paris and mixed it with some tiny granules of sand and itty bitty pebbles and filled the back side of the relief with it after first laying down saran wrap. I let it dry, pulled it out, sprayed it with stone-looking paint and chipped away bits of it to give it an aged look. I then ended up dotting on some green paints to make it look moss covered and used some pale icy blue paint to do lichens. When I was done, it look positively ancient. Now, I keep my eyes opened for those plastic molded wall hangings-the back sides are useful.

That sounds like it turned out awesome! Great idea. The saran wrap kept it from sticking when you pulled out the “cast?” Did you use it as a Halloween decoration?
