Ghost of the Forest

May 15th, 2010 by John Wolfe

Technically, the Spanish title of this creepy little film translates to “The Specter of the Forest,” but specter seems like such an antiquated English word–everyone just calls it a ghost now. After saying that, undoubtedly I’ll be writing an entry in the future where I’ve used “ghost” at least one-hundred times, and I’m desperately searching for an alternative to break the repetition. Ultimately, I’ll have to start using “specter” again. :)

There’s no subtitles for this short, but that’s okay because outside of a disembodied voice and some startle scares, no one’s really speaking anyway.

That had a really neat style to it–I wonder how they did some of it. You find some real gems! Oh, and other names for ghost/spectre “spirit” “soul” “apparition…”

This was a great little film. While he was running I thought, “hey that looked like me running through the dark and slippery halls of that darn haunted house in ’83!” I’ll never forget that night and if I had my own blog site and didn’t mind sharing personal stories with all the world, surely that would be one of my first few entries. It still haunts me to this very day.

Ahhh, the use of the word “ghost.” Well, for the masses it seems to be a word they enjoy hearing and grabs their attention. Unlike if you said, “today while at the cemetery I saw and ethereal being!!” LoL ;-) Just might confuse some. I suppose you could say: apparition, eidolon, incorporeal being, manes, phantasm, phantom, revenant, shadow, soul, specter, visitor, being, or entity. However, as mentioned, many of those terms wouldn’t quite register with most humans out there and they would just pass it by. LoL, just take the show Ghost Hunters…..how effective would the title have been if they called it Incorporeal Being Hunters ;-) LoL, people would be scratching their head saying, “Ma….what’s an incorporeal being???”

I never doubt YOUR ability to pull out new words from your hat to describe an old term. It’s one of the many reasons that I’m smitten with your writing so much dear friend. Your inconceivable capability to be so intricate in your composing and yet it’s perfectly comprehensible. Truly a superior quality to have as a writer and seems very rare to find. I love your work John, always have and always will :-)

    autumnforest,

I was wondering the same thing about how it was created. There’s some really talented people posting their creepy animations on YT. It sometimes can take many hours to uncover them, but when I do, it’s so worth the effort–plus I’m naturally stubborn anyway, so I just keep looking until I find something I think you guys may enjoy. Thanks for the other alternate terms for ghost. I can always stand to beef-up my internal thesaurus when it comes to paranormal words and phrases.

    Goldie,

Your experience in that haunted house must have been really intense. I know you’ve shared it with me before, but I didn’t realize how strong of an impression it left. Thanks for beefing-up my ghost vocabulary too. I’ve never even heard of an eidolon.

LOL! Your comment about an alternate title for Ghost Hunters reminds me of the Friends episode where Joey had to write a letter of endorsement for Monica and Chandler when they were trying to adopt. He wrote the letter in typical Joey fashion, but to sound smarter, he went back and replaced every word with an alternate word from a thesaurus. By the time he was finished the letter didn’t make any sense, but it did sound smarter.

Thank you, my friend. I appreciate that!

    ssflipo13,

Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it. It’s totally my pleasure to share it with you guys.
