Halloween 2008: “Lost” Footage
January 28th, 2010 by John WolfeI found this video from Halloween 2008 yesterday. I last worked on it back in November of ’08; saved it off and forgot about it — thinking I’d finish it eventually with additional editing and adding some audio (music or voice-over). Unfortunately, I never got around to finishing it, and eventually the project slipped my mind.
After coming across it again yesterday, I decided to upload it just as I had last left it: very rough, with all the flaws I was going to fix back in ’08.
There’s no sound on the video clips, other than me trudging through the leaves, and a little heavy breathing! That’s what happens whenever I run on two hours of sleep, eat one meal, and inhale a ton of fog fluid smoke (my usual schedule on Halloween eve and Halloween day/night) — allergies and exhaustion set in, and I’m laboring like I just smoked a carton of “Luckies!”

Oooooooo, I LOVED the black and white frames hun!!! It looks so art-sey and creepy all at the same time. Also I got a giggle out of hearing you play around, in your last upload, with your chilling voice saying a spooky sentence as if you were about to tell the story. Your not shy about doing something like that are you? I still think you would be the best person to ever tell a ghost story be it in video form or sitting around a campfire late at night. You have so many talents that have yet to be unleashed my friend
I’m pleased you found this video….now if you just had more time to convert the VHS into DVR from your past Halloweens. Now that would be kick ass and, dare I say, almost vintage by now

I had my Muse “Absolution” album playing while surfing and I was watching your video when the song Apocalypse Please came up and it went with your video so well, it was stunning! That is really amazing. Makes me want to drive to your neck of the woods just for Halloween night! I’m so glad you film it, but still these kind of displays have a visceral feel that you can’t get without being there, cool air on your nose, crunching leaves, sounds of people gasping…

Goldie,
I bet I know why you enjoyed the black and white so much — you’re just like me when it comes to loving those old 8mm and 16mm Halloween home movies. I can’t get enough of those things! I’m definitely cool with doing spooky sounding voice-over stuff. Another dream of mine is to one day have a home recording studio where I can get a ton of great audio equipment for creating even better sounding recordings.
I still have plans to see if I can locate my 1997 Halloween video. It should be at my parents’ house. I don’t have the equipment I need to convert it directly to digital video, but if I do locate it, then I may just invest in what I need. Seeing how it’s going to be twelve-years-old this October, it is getting close to being considered “retro” in the very least.
Thanks for your feedback!
autumnforest,
I’m not familiar with that song, but I’ll definitely look for the video on You Tube. I use YT for all my music stuff nowadays. You’re right, there is a difference between seeing it on video and being there in person. I guess that’s why I try and get up close and personal with my props, the jack-o-lanterns, fog, and leaves while I’m shooting. Walking through the display, along with all the extreme close-ups, gives about as intimate a look as possible if someone watches it on a screen instead of being able to stand in front of the haunt on Halloween night.
Thanks for watching. I’m glad you liked it.
