Halloween 2010 – Update 4
February 20th, 2010 by John WolfeAdding the fourth installment to the Halloween 2010 Preview Page. I’ll be finishing the Angel’s ribcage tonight or tomorrow, then it’s off to the local hardware store to go “wing” shopping. I wonder if Home Depot has a make-your-own gigantic bat kit I could buy?

“I wonder if Home Depot has a make-your-own gigantic bat kit I could buy?” — Wouldn’t that help out tremendously!!! I do believe you have some wonderful ideas regarding the wings though. Yet another great update John. He’s coming right along nicely. I deeply appreciate these little updates you do along the way, regardless of the progress made. It’s nice to see how things are coming along. Keep up the great work

Unbleached muslin would be great for the wings–it has that aged look about it (you can even soak it in hot water with a lot of tea bags and it stains nicely an even more uneven antiqued look. Plus, muslin edges fray nicely and still have a thin, almost see-through feel. I’m so excited! I can’t wait to see it coming together. You seem to be pacing yourself ideally to have it ready and tested in time.

Goldie,
I think I’ll ask one of the associates for that kit when I go to Home Depot, just to see what kind of strange looks I receive! I’m hoping my wing ideas work. After more adjustments tonight, I came to the conclusion that I’m definitely going to try using 7/8 inch (diameter) wood dowels, all cut to varying lengths. I’ll probably use a knife to whittle off the straight edges and make them look rougher. Thanks for watching and for your feedback.
autumnforest,
I so appreciate the muslin suggestion. Thank you. I am absolutely going to look for that at the fabric store. I’ll probably end up painting it gray to go along with the rest of him, but based on how you said it absorbs tea stains, it sounds like it will retain paint, too. I wish I could take credit for my pace, but often times my pace is dictated by the fact I end up redoing a lot of what I just worked on.
For example, the entire mount for the wings and lower ribs had to be removed tonight after making my video. I found the design wasn’t quite going to work. So I re-cut a longer mount and am attaching it higher up on the spine.
frightnight,
Thanks. I’m keeping the camera recording during the majority of the process. Once he’s completely finished, then I’ll start working on the time-lapse for the next Halloween Haunter’s Reality.

Ethan,
Are you taking the summer term off? If so, I’m sure you’ll get a ton accomplished then. Your props are awesome, so whatever you have time to create, I know it will kick butt!
The Frog Queen,
Thanks.
I went to Home Depot this morning and picked up my supplies. I was so tempted to ask the lady who waited on me if they had them in stock, but I chickened out! Thank you for watching, for your feedback and for your inspiration as well.

Lookin’ good John. This thing is going to be SWEET! It’s nice to see that I’m not the only one working on Halloween props 3/4 of a year before the holiday.
I’ve yet to start any of my bigger props as of yet, just toying with the little things for now.
Keep up the good work, Cant wait to see this one finished

S.K. Austin,
Great to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words about the prop! I’ve learned over the last couple of years that I have to begin my prop work earlier and earlier, especially when venturing into working on something like the “Angel,” due to all the unfamiliar things about his design. It feels good to have gotten started back in January. Now, I’m just hoping I can “bring him in” before October; giving me time to work on at least one more groundbreaker before Halloween.
Please, give me a holler as you post your 2010 creations. I love your work and look forward to seeing what’s new on your site.
