Halloween 2010 – Update 5

March 1st, 2010 by John Wolfe

I’ve now reached the point in building the Angel of Death where everything is totally unfamiliar. This last week has been a lot of, “I’ll try it like this. Nope, that didn’t work. How ’bout I do it like that. Nope, not that way either. Okay, I’ll try it this way…” You get the idea. I’m just sort of winging it as I go, which is a nice segue into today’s video since it’s all about the prop’s left wing. :)

    John;
    Just two things—
    1. How did you whittle with a box cutter and not hurt yourself?
    2. I always wanted to know, when you’re working in your shop–do you put on scary music while you work?

It’s really amazing how it’s coming along. The birth of an angel of death–I love it! You’ve really come up with some brilliant ways to get around the roadblocks. It takes real ingenuity to figure out how to push past a problem and make it work. Your determination means this will pay off big-time. You really ought to be in Hollywood making monsters!

Niiiiiiiiice, he’s going to be a delicious big boy!! He’s coming right along John and this was an excellent update. Thank you deeply, as always, for sharing your projects along the way. May be to early for the webcam but it’s the next best thing to seeing it more real time ;-) LOVE his wingspan, absolutely awesome. It was more than easy to imagine the whole thing with this update and the pieces are really clicking in place. I’m really glad your not rushing this creation because it is more than worthy of your brilliant, creative, undivided attention and abilities. Not to mention this is an excellent challenge for you as your mind indeed thrives on constant movement and change. Sounds like a segue for WindoftheSoul ;-)

Great work my friend, truly, it is unfolding perfectly…..and for more than one “thing” in your life ;-)

    autumnforest,

I think all of my time working as a grocery store stocker (using cutters day in and day out) has come in handy in not injuring myself. We had to be fast at stocking or else, which meant you also had to be fast at cutting box tops with a blade. After doing that craziness for years, whittling with a cutter is actually a lot safer… LOL. :)

I do put on the dark music. I listen to a lot of Nox Arcana, raison d’etre, Midnight Syndicate and several others while working on props.

The roadblocks and challenges are definitely there for building something like this guy. But, I really enjoy being challenged on the prop building; it makes for a slow process, but it’s so rewarding when a piece starts coming together.

Thanks for watching and for your extremely kind comment.

    Goldie,

I started out with a somewhat smaller wingspan in mind, but as I was putting the pieces together, I decided to go bigger! After attaching another piece tonight, the width is really getting more pronounced. I like the exaggeration, though. I’ve found when it comes to building props for Halloween night, the more exaggeration the better; it causes them to pop out even more, especially in low lighting.

I found that by creating a larger wing span, it means he’s also going to have to be lifted higher off of the ground, so I’ll need to go back and make some adjustments to the original support structure that I filmed in the very first video, but it will be worth it to get him positioned properly.

I’m definitely going to do my best to take my time and pay close attention to every detail. The more I work on him, the more he begins to deviate from the original idea and starts morphing more into a slightly different Angel, but that’s another cool thing about creating stuff.

Thanks for watching and for your support!

I never would have guessed that was how you were going to build his wings. The whittled look is a nice touch. These updates have inspired me to start working on my own Halloween stuff even earlier this year.

Thank you, frightnight, I really appreciate that. Honestly, when I first started working on him, I wouldn’t have guessed that was how I was going to do it either! LOL. I had no clue how to do it, but by experimenting, I came up with the system I’m using. Glad to hear these videos have been a source of inspiration.
