Halloween 2010 – Update 9
March 31st, 2010 by John WolfeSorry I missed posting yesterday, but I ended up a little behind on prop work this week and I needed the day to do some catch up on the Angel. Since my last update, I’ve been experimenting with “skinning” the wing.
Up next, I need to do a lot of distressing to the overall look of the wing’s membrane.

Dude–it’s looking so good! I agree, RIT dye is the way to go. You can get variations on it if you put it into the sink with the hot water and dye and then ball it up. It can come out really varegated which is a cool look. If you stir it up and move it around, it’ll be more evenly dyed. I used to dye everything including my canvas sneakers cause I’m a color freak and want a certain color or else! I’m excited to see it with the frame painted light gray and see how that goes with the wings. I think once the fabric is dyed and you put it back up, you’ll notice if the frame needs to repainted or not. You might change your mind. The tattering on the edges is easy with muslin. I actually hung mine with the cut edges like you did, outside and let the wind tatter it for a few months and then tea-stained it for my project. Looking great! You make me want to get in the car and drive there just for Halloween night!

Thanks, autumnforest! I worked for years in a grocery store and was always stocking RIT dyes; I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me sooner to use that instead of spray-paint.
Thanks for the pointers on working with the dye–I’ve never tried using that stuff before.
That’s a good idea about holding off on repainting the wing’s frame until I see how the dye job will look against it. I know you guys are planning a trip out this way, it’s too bad it won’t be around Halloween or else you could swing by.
