Halloween at Grandma’s

October 8th, 2008 by John Wolfe

“Over the river and through the woods, to grandmother’s house we go”… wrong holiday, huh? ;) I stopped by my grandparents’ yesterday and grabbed some shots of their Halloween decor. Actually, they’re my grandma’s decorations. My grandfather’s association with Halloween only extends as far as insulting zombie flicks! Now, in all fairness, he does lend a hand with hauling cornstalks and supplying scrap lumber (and I appreciate it immensely), but when it comes to haunting the house – forget about it.

The images in this post are only a sampling. My grandmother does to the indoors what I do to the great outdoors. The only difference – she has a classy collection of glistening, ceramic gourds, hand-stitched scarecrows, plastic jack-o-lanterns and so forth; while I have drooling, undead corpses greeting visitors. I told you Halloween was a family affair.

My grandparents have always made every holiday special at their home. However, when I was a kid, we usually didn’t get to visit very often for Halloween. So, as an adult (who now lives just a couple miles away), I relish the opportunity to stop by and soak up the ambiance. My grandmother’s collection has continued to grow and expand and I always look forward to seeing what she’ll have in store for next year.

Even though we haunt our homes with very different styles, I can see where a lot of my Halloween roots stem from. The only thing is my grandmother’s enjoyment of a kinder gentler Halloween didn’t rub off on me. I’m not sure where I developed my love affair with Halloween’s darker side. :)

John, this was GREAT to see! I’ve ALWAYS had a fondness and love affair with the grandparents of the world for their stories, experiences, and energy is unlike any other on Earth. Your grandparents sound like sweet kind souls, yes, even the Red Fox in the grouping ;-) I’m confident your grandmother and I would talk for hours upon hours about everything under the sun. I have more, rather private thoughts to add, but a public message board/comment board is not the place for them.

My favorite season of all time is fall and aside from my BD, my favorite “holiday” has always been Halloween. It’s the one time when pumpkins make their first outing, pies are being baked, decorations come out, gorgeous fall colors of the leaves start to show, ghost and goblin costumes come out and so on. It’s a ritual with me that as soon as the pumpkins and tiny pumpkins are in the store, I buy a handful and spread them all over my home :-) Due to a new baby and now a new puppy, the middle of October has snuck up behind me and I’m unable to decorate the ways I usually do this year. Which brings me to Grandma….

You know, I was rather surprised to see that Grandma and I have rather the same taste for Halloween decor! She and I would be a dangerous mix at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. I am wickedly great with the hot glue gun and can fuse together decorations to create a spooky scene, or a classy fall scene like never before. Scarecrows, tiny pumpkins, fall leaves, mini trees, corn stalks and so on….just by laying them out, setting up the scene, glueing it all in place and TaDaaaaa, I would have a 12 inch long Halloween scene ;-) I have both my spooky decor and then the more traditional classic fall displays or with my Mom, he loves glitter on the pumpkins so, it’s truly FUN for ALL. Your photos are fantastic. Having a cannon now and playing with it, taking photos of different angles, different zooms, different positions is so much fun. When I see the Baby again tonight, yes again but I always arrive with Sushi for the parents….yumm, I’m going to take crazy perfect photos of him and I know just the setting too.

OH, sorry this is so long, we got a Halloween costume for Baby, Oh…..John, I wish you could see this thing! I damn near cried! It’s a little green dragon Baby costume with a long tail in the back, the bumpy spikes on the back (soft of course) then when you pull the warm hood over his tiny little head, he’s got an adorable little dragon head. LoL ;-) It is beyond precious John….I’ll send you the photos in a while. This IS THEE best October EVER!!! Again, sorry so long…..glad your corn is doing better. SeaonsofShadows has been a GREAT addition this year to my Fall/Halloween feel. Instead of clicking on my email very first thing in the am as my body creaks in movement ;-) SeasonofShadows is the first thing I click on and see if you have updated from the night before. Of course, suppose it would be easier to make it my home-page….duhh Goldie~ LoL~~~

    Goldie,

Even the Red Foxx part of my grandfather is a very endearing quality…LoL. You just have to have that sort of sense of humor to see its benefits. :) I imagined this post would resonate with you because I know how you like to decorate for Halloween.

The baby’s costume sounds great! I look forward to seeing pics of him on his first Halloween.

By all means, make Season of Shadows your homepage! I highly encourage it. :D

Trust me, Grandpa sounds as delightful in his own ways and I’m confident that this Goldie package would give him a run for his money and leave him scratching his head wondering how a cute little lady can match his “words.” I hear from many all the time how highly unusual I am from most women, which is very true. Plus my Poppo, when he was alive, had a very simular way about him but with heavy flirting mixed in as ONLY he could do. So, trust me when I say Grandpa sounds like as much fun as I KNOW Grandma would be.

LoL…..John, if they even read this post….LoL, think they would be shocked that so “much” talk is mentioned of them on this forum? LoL, my Poppo would have been flattered. My nephew literally swims in is dragon outfit but what an adorable costume for the world’s most handsome baby ;-)

I cannot believe, yet I can, the orbS photos I took last night. I went over them more so and blown up and JOHN, holy moly, how can anyone say those are light particles when every single orb has a different look to it! Some are 2 orbs in one, others are gathered up together, some have shapes in the middle of them, one orb seems to have a facial look, some are orange, some are bright white, and this one photo I took has one big healthy orb literally SITTING on the fence wire just chillin’!!! I was on such a high last night, I’m still easily working off of 2 hours sleep……..now I want to drive to the river at night during a full moon and snap more photos there. Wait till you see HOW MANY there are. Talk about the supernatural and paranormal….my heavens!

Thanks for your replies as always John. That’s ultra cool of you to take the time to do so. I’m most eager for your continued updates and yaaaaa, last work day for a week, aaaahh vacation, it sure is sweet!

    Always All My Best, Goldie~~~
