Halloween Bumpers
December 3rd, 2009 by John WolfeRemember when television stations used to provide warm and fuzzy Halloween wishes and Halloween marathon promos in between their regular programming? You don’t? Well, neither do I.
But thankfully, some You Tube users remember and they were kind enough to convert the following short but sweet 1980′s recordings.

While the first two clips state their locations, this third clip (after doing a little research) appears to be from Providence, RI. I can remember “Christmas Wishes” bumpers, but I don’t think we ever lived in a market where our stations wished us a Happy Halloween via the above methods.

Great finds! Why don’t stations wish you a happy Halloween? They do it at Xmas time.

Hmmm, now we do have the Halloween wishes from the tv stations around here. Usually something quick like that, about 10 seconds or so, in which a creepy image was shown with “Happy Halloween” floating across the screen. Where I live, channel 31 created a Halloween play for the entire 30 seconds usually pertaining to all of the anchors dead due to the poisoned cookies the secretary made, who was in her 80′s. Another one was of the anchors being chased by that same secretary with a chain saw and so forth. Those were provided in the last week of October. Ya’ll didn’t have that in NM?

autumnforest,
Exactly! Every year Halloween continues to draw closer to matching Christmas as the most celebrated holiday in America, yet it still doesn’t get the props it deserves in certain circles. Oh well, I guess people like us, who go over-the-top in recognizing and celebrating it, make up for those who don’t.
Ethan,
Thanks, glad you liked those! I often think of the 80′s in the same way. Although, if I could go back, I don’t think I would. Once around in childhood was enough for me.
Goldie,
As Borat would say, “Wow-ee, wa-wa!” Your channels go all out!
We don’t have anything remotely close to that. In fact, there isn’t even a mention of Halloween by our local channels during promos or bumpers. Jessica Garate of our Fox affiliate was kind enough to do a segment on Season of Shadows, and occasionally you’ll see a bit about Spirit Halloween and a few of the local pro haunted houses on the news. However, you never get any feel-good Halloween wishes here.
