Halloween Groundbreaker Update 2

September 22nd, 2009 by John Wolfe

Shot some more video footage of this past week’s mache updates to the groundbreaker corpse. Overall, I’m pretty satisfied with the prop’s appearance. I did try a new body design for this zombie and I’ve come to notice the skull is a little on the large side for the torso’s dimensions. However, details like that aren’t always a bad thing. In fact, they can become a great asset when working on projects of a spooky nature. I’ve found that distorting, elongating and overemphasizing certain body parts (whether intentionally or accidentally) adds to the creepiness of a prop.

Oooooooooo, this looks excellent John!!! I was just thinking last night, while watching the webcam, how much I would love to see a close up. You must have felt my vibe……..as always my friend ;-) May the force be with you in finishing up ANOTHER corpse before Halloween night….39 days and counting. I can’t believe it……….thank you for sharing John and I appreciate your kind comments back.

    G,

Thanks, it’s great to hear from you. I’ve admired your work for quite some time – all the way back to the MOM board over at Terror Syndicate in 2006.

    autumnforest,

    Thank you!

    Goldie,

Glad you like it! Thanks for the well wishes. I have a prop design in mind, but it may be a little too ambitious for the amount of time I have left. I’ll see where I’m at time wise, once this one is completed. If I don’t use the design I’m thinking of, then it will wait ’till next year. I had been considering going with ghosts next Halloween, but I’m so loving the mache that I’m going to keep exploring and expanding on my techniques for 2010 as well.

It may take a few days to clean up and rest up after Halloween, but I absolutely have plans to get right back in the shop during the first week of November, with the webcam rolling of course. The Angel of Death prop has been getting designed in my head ever since I blogged that video a few weeks ago. He’ll be the first one I create over the winter months and I can’t wait to start on him!

Hey you, I had no idea about your intentions to branch out from ground-breakers next year. I knew you wanted to do something different but I didn’t know you were thinking THAT different. If I may kindly share my opinion John, YOUR READY FOR IT. I love all of your ground-breakers big time and they look much to real for my taste, however, the thought of you taking it to the next step truly excites me!!!! You’ve got the mache techniques down pat so I would relish the chance to see you create some larger, more expansive and more ghost like. Of course, I have that photo in my mind and I’m beyond confident that you could absolutely create something that grand in size and in appearance.

Oh and saw your last post about the Thriller dance………..now I would actually pay money to see you dance like that, or dance at all ;-) TeeHee

    Killer Corpse!

By the way, I love the blog and it’s totally getting me excited for next month.

Just found a really funny “What Not to Wear for Halloween 2009″ blog post and I thought you might be interested.

    Goldie,

When you say, “the groundbreakers are too real for your taste,” that’s the biggest and nicest compliment I can get. :) My grandma said something similar a while back and my immediate reaction was, “Hell yeah!” I love trying to create something that looks horrifyingly real without being gory.

The nice thing about dancing to Thriller would be the fact I’d be in a costume, so I’d feel a lot more comfortable dancing. Let’s talk exact dollar amounts and I’ll see what I can do! :) j/k

I love this! The strain in the neck and jaw is wonderful. Looks like it really hurts to wake up dead. Fantastic detail.

    Randall,

Awesome! I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the blog and the corpse. Thanks a lot. Thanks as well for the link, there’s some funny stuff in that post!

    Johnny,

Thanks, man. Good to hear from you. I model my corpses after my own experience of trying to get my joints functioning in the morning! :) I now know what Garth Brooks meant when he sang about being much too young to feel this damn old! LOL.
