Halloween Haunter’s Reality
August 29th, 2008 by John WolfeOver the course of the next sixty three days I’ve decided to do a sort of reality video blog series- Halloween style. Each video will feature “fly on the wall” type recordings of my nine week prep work counting down to Halloween night. I have a lot of projects ahead of me- some I may finish, some I may not, but it’s my intention to document a large portion of these with short (roughly ten to twenty minute) video segments. Basically, I’ll be attaching the digital camera to my hip for the next several weeks.
I’ll be taking it with me during every Halloween related trip or project I’m working on and grabbing footage along the way.
Since I’m emphasizing the reality portion of these videos, there’s not going to be any fancy camera work or great soundtracks. The footage will be posted as is, including all of the flaws, cracks and pops, with very little editing. I’ll be operating the camera myself, unless it’s set up on the tripod, so the majority of this series will be point of view shots.
While I’ve never been a fan of traditional reality programming, I thought this would be something really fun to do; since it’s actually about showcasing Halloween items and Halloween preparations instead of focusing on a person’s life.
The first video was recorded yesterday while I was adding skin and texture to a ground breaker skeleton in my garage. You can play it by following this link or watching it below in the embedded YouTube player. The running time is 7 minutes, 31 seconds. I hope you enjoy it!
The ambient music playing on my garage CD player, in this clip, is by raison d’etre.

Fantastic!!! I left you a huge comment on your youtube page. I truly enjoy all of your creative efforts and sharings with us dearly BUT I must say that I’m most excited for this series to be unwrapped over the next 63 days. I found your video to be most interesting and seeing the “hand” work that goes into making those spooky looking corpses just blew my mind away. The skull alone must take a while but then add the rib-cage too, plus 2 more corpses, WOW!! I am thoroughly looking forward to viewing first hand, thousands of miles away, just how it is you make your creations. Moreover, of course you would need some creepy tunes on in the background. I must admit, in an odd sort of way, I found the “sounds” to be rather relaxing, reminded me of some of my meditation CD’s. Yikes right?
Maybe it was that Bob Ross “sound” that did it too
LoL, either way, I enjoyed this video MORE than I thought I would and it was a nice break in my day of heavy thoughts pertaining to TOO much right now. Thank you for simply being the awesome and kind soul that you are John. We all love you dearly. Happy Haunting and can’t wait for your next upload!!

Goldie,
Thanks! Glad the video took you a little by surprise…in a good way. I’m hoping to get two more corpses finished. The next one should be done in the same style you see in the video, but the last one may be a “quickie” version.
Johnny,
Thanks, a lot. I’m working on more footage today and over the next few days too- hopefully for an update by the end of the week.
S.a.M.,
It’s great to know a lot of people remember Bob Ross. I loved his stuff!

Hey John,
Great video! If there’s anything harder than spending the time to create really cool Halloween props it’s taking the time to document the whole process! Many kudos…
I can’t wait to see the progress!
Thanks for everything!
Talk to you soon.

Victor,
Glad you had a chance to come by and check it out! It is absolutely time consuming, but man, I know you can understand when I say it’s truly a labor of love. Of course, I actually have a hard time calling it labor….it’s way too much fun. I just have to get over my stage fright with being in front of the camera. Maybe I’ll print out one of your paper masks from your site and wear it in the next video…lol!
Thanks for your nice comments and for watching the first installment.
