Halloween Melon Brains

April 2nd, 2009 by John Wolfe

Found a Halloween how-to at Instructables for creating melon brains. This project brings back trick-or-treating memories. I encountered two homes during my youth that featured the old “touch the brain” gag. One was undoubtedly spaghetti encased in a brown paper bag, while the other appeared to be some sort of jello mold. I distinctly remember the spaghetti brain’s house because the doorbell was rigged to sound like a truck horn. It scared the hell out of us. The door opened to complete darkness; a moment of hesitation and then two witches leapt out carrying a bag purported to hold the brains of Igor. :) Good stuff!

I have never seen anything like this before!!! Whoever carved this did a wonderful job at it because it resembles the human brain perfectly and that could not have been easy. Looks like honeydew is the chosen melon to carve in. Personally I always fancy the light tint of green that is casted naturally. LoL, oddly enough, I was just thinking about your Honey Jack you carved and how it’s still my favorite Jack-of-the-day posting.

And oooooooooooooh yes, the good ‘ol spaghetti gag, remember that well. Of course no doubt you remember the eyeballs in a bowl which were done out of grapes. Where do those memories come from with me? Don’t laugh but the bible study class I used to go to as a small child. LoL, Halloween was big and the parties were huge.

I also had a fleeting thought of you today while I was playing my Gameboy Pac-man and Galaxia. The tune, the simplicity in the game…..more memories of the summer days spent at the yogurt shop when they used to have the video games you could sit at and use as a table. Remember those? LoL, as if sitting helped at all…….never felt right to sit and play the game and boy did that joystick take a beating ;-) You always bring out the most amazing childhood memories for me John. Your a blessing in more ways than I can count.

Honeydew is a really easy melon to carve and one of my favorites to eat as well. :) This one was actually watermelon according to the website. But it does look like it could be honeydew.

I’ve seen the floating grapes on television, but I don’t think I’ve ever come across them on Halloween before.

I absolutely remember playing those tabletop arcade games. It seemed the Pac-Man genre and space games were the only kind they ever released for those units. I remember playing them at Pizza Hut. The joysticks were worn out and always very greasy. :)

Thank you as well, Goldie. I appreciate your friendship.
