Halloween Porcelain House
July 28th, 2009 by John Wolfe
When I was a kid, Halloween was always about putting everything I had into the yard display. It didn’t matter to me if we had a single decoration indoors, as long I was loaded for bear outside. Masks stuffed with newspaper, plastic skeletons, fake blood, vampire teeth, the whole nine yards — it all went outdoors. Anything I could get my hands on was either propped up on the lawn, taped to the side of the house, tied to porch railings or hung upside down from the roof! Back in the day, Halloween was a wild time.
Now, as an adult, I actually enjoy celebrating inside with little odds and ends just as much as doing my “Chevy Chase/Christmas Vacation” impression on the exterior. This little haunted house is one of my latest additions to the interior.

Ironically, when I was a child, all of our Halloween decorations were inside. I don’t recall anything outside, not even a pumpkin. Likely because we lived out in the country on a hill at the top of quite a long driveway and got few TOT’s. Now, I think I have a decent balance between indoors and out. Cute house. I have a few that look similar and love them

I started collecting the cemetery-themed little sets every Halloween. This year, I’m taking a board and making some plastered ground on it, fixing it up, making tiny railing, and putting the cemetery parts into one giant cemetery display. Only problem is, I don’t have a table to display it on. My friend suggested putting a hanger on the back of the board and hanging it on the wall like art. Hmm… Might be a good idea. I do admit that although I go nuts outside, I set up a little place around the TV with tons of scary candleholders so I can watch scary movies and feel spooked out. I also like to cover the furniture in white sheets and put up cobwebs to feel like I’m in an abandoned home. I guess I’m not the only one who gets the Halloween bug in summertime!

halloween spirit,
Great to hear from you! Thanks for sharing some childhood memories. Anytime I read about someone’s Halloween memories from their youth, I always get nostalgic. Actually, I did spend a year at my grandparents when I was younger, and similar to your experience, we didn’t decorate outside due to lack of trick-or-treaters.
autumnforest,
Very cool! I think our local Sam’s Club carries a version of cemetery sets at Halloween. I may have to start collecting those too.
Holy cow, I would love to visit your house in October. I’ve never thought of throwing sheets over the furniture – great idea. Do you use the stretchy, store-bought cobwebs or do you go the extra route and spray them on?
