Halloween Productions: Seance

March 9th, 2009 by John Wolfe

I came across this really cool seance sequence by Halloween Productions. The visual effects are stunning, but I also enjoy focusing on the audio. I’ve always been interested in voice work and would love to lend some sounds to haunt animation.

Holy Christ, that’s awesome. I don’t see what’s great about the audio, though. I like it and everything, and I can see how it could be used as an animated mirror in a theme park, but I’m intrigued as to what the audio means to you…

    Hey,

I followed your thread on Twitter. This is really neat. If you were to put this in your haunt do you just put it on a regular flat screen television? and then put a frame around it?? How do you get the timing down?

    Anyways thanks for posting this

    HalloweenLvrNo1,

I’ve always been far more in-tune to sound and emotion than visual imagery. I can see something that others feel has amazing visual effects but be fairly unaffected by it. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it, it just doesn’t move me the way it usually moves other people. On the other hand, I can hear something that seems totally mundane to most, yet find it riveting. I love to turn away from visual stimulation and instead listen to every subtle nuance in the audio. For me, audio impacts my emotions and I connect far greater to it. I’d love to enter a haunt that has no props and instead is strictly a void of darkness, accompanied by haunting audio. That would probably be my ideal haunt. :)

    Iscream_Uscream,

Thanks for coming over and checking it out! I wish I could help you on your questions. The flat screen television would probably work well, but I have no clue as to how this could be applied in a haunt in terms of working out the timing for your visitors. You may want to follow the Halloween Productions link in the post and get in touch with those guys. I’m sure they could help.

I see, but as you’ve said, not many people feel what you feel when it comes to audio, so they really wouldn’t know what to do to create that kind of awesome audio effect.

Definitely. It all comes down to personal interpretation and preference. I was speaking with Victor of Haunted Sauce the other day and he was talking about some really cool whisper sound effects he downloaded a while back. There also was a company online a few years ago which sold whisper sounds that could be easily applied to several stereos and speaker systems, creating an echo/surround sound effect. I think this style would be great for a home haunt and not too complicated to create, at least in theory.

Well, my favorite sound effect of all time would be when watching a video or movie and the drama is built up with music, and then they cut to black with with a loud noise that sort of sounds like an old gong. That, however, needs video accompanying it to make it work, but so does this video. I suppose with a mediocre video, you could have some fun with sound and have the whole thing be awesome.

I wish iTunes had sound effects. That would be a revolution in Home/Yard Haunting and it would certainly inspire a lot of people.

That reminds me of the master of suspense: Alfred Hitchcock and the way he could build the intensity. That would be great if iTunes would incorporate sounds – even if just during the Halloween season.
