Halloween Pumpkin Cookie Jar

October 10th, 2009 by John Wolfe

A few days ago, I stopped by my parents’ house to replace a bathroom faucet and my mom surprised me with this glass, Halloween pumpkin full of chocolate chip and black cat sugar cookies! However, this isn’t any ol’ ordinary glass pumpkin. When I was a kid, I bugged my parents to buy me this thing at Dunkin Donuts. If I remember correctly, the pumpkin came full of Halloween Munchkins (DD’s name for donut holes) during the 80′s.

After a few Halloweens of the pumpkin being loaded with all sorts of goodies, someone broke it (probably me, but I’ve conveniently blocked that event from my memory). I hadn’t seen a glass pumpkin donut/cookie jar in over twenty-years, until my grandma found this one. She had a yard sale; my mom bought it from her and gave it to me, and ta-dah I have my pumpkin back. :D

While I was adjusting it for the photo, all I could smell was the cookie scent wafting out the top. I know what I’m having for lunch… well, make that after lunch. Thanks, Mom!

This is a really awesome pumpkin!! I’ve seen countless numbers of pumpkin cookie bins but that were painted so you couldn’t see the insides. I can honestly say I’ve never seen a glass pumpkin container before. After viewing it in this delightful picture, I can see why it became an instant love of yours. The very fact that it’s been around for this long is priceless but so are the types of cookies your Mom chose to fill the pumpkin with!! ;-) Granted, seeing it filled with donut holes must be cool but black cat sugar cookies are much more appropriate by far than donuts. Your Mom has excellent taste on more levels than one! Now that it’s in YOUR hands, I can only imagine what it will be filled with next but damn those sugar cookies ARE appetizing, aren’t they? Thank you for sharing dear friend, as always and for the note, NO I will not bake some sugar cookies now………tempting but I WILL resist ;-)

Do you remember these being available during the 80′s, Goldie? I think the donut holes were glazed with orange and black icing. It seems like Dunkin Donuts did something to them during October so they would look appropriate in the cookie jar. Yeah, it’s been a tradition for the last few Halloweens for my mom to make us all batches of those cookies. Some come with ghosts and jack-o-lanterns as well. She takes good care of us (specifically my grandfather and me when it comes to food) :)

Surely you could eat just one. ;) I think I ate around eight yesterday… LOL!

I too have a glass pumpkin that I purchased at Dunkin Donuts in the 80s and I still have it!

However, I see them every year at Walmart. They are about $4. I saw thema few weeks ago and went back to get one, it case mine breaks, and they were all gone. But, Walmart sell them every year about this time.

Ah, man, and here I thought my replacement pumpkin was unique and from the 80′s! LOL. Well, it still could be I suppose. Thanks for letting me know about Walmart carrying the pumpkins, Janet. Have a great Halloween!
