Halloween Tales #2
October 11th, 2008 by John Wolfe
In continuing with posting my short Halloween stories from the Chaos section – today’s entry features the events of Halloween night from a jack-o-lantern’s perspective. In writing these pieces of fiction, I never intended initially to reveal the main character’s identity. It was my way of being cryptic; yet hoping the reader would pick up on the context clues in order to decipher my meaning for themselves. Since reposting the stories in the blog, however, I decided to reveal a little more about the identity of whose point of view is being represented.
This entry is titled Carved:
Through my jagged eyes and mouth the light pours forth, flitting and flickering- casting obscure shapes and distorted shadows upon the terrain- providing just enough illumination for the awareness of my surroundings and the inevitability of what’s to come.
I am at the mercy of insidious creatures plodding through the night- coming ever so close to trampling me. From the darkness they converge, trekking past my forlorn expression- shrieking and hollering for some pitiful form of appeasement and pittance, until they receive that which they came for. It is abruptly dropped in their satchels and into the blackness they diverge, never to be seen again.
The vile earth, I rest upon, is damp and chilled, as my only source of warmth emanates from a point deep within, singeing my innards and leaving a fowl odor to waft out my nose. If this source should diminish, I fear it will be my demise. I can only assume I have been cast out to fester and decay, once my purpose has been served. It is a race to find that which is to be ultimately responsible for my fate- the elements or the horrors of the night that taunt me. The dawn will soon tear through this ebony shroud, ushering in its own brilliance, and taking with it, my sole reason for being.

Oh wow, I have a whole new appreciation for your writing skills John! You honestly have an INTENSE mind for writing, you really do, as with everything you do obviously. I’m looking forward to MANY things about 2009 right now and one of the tops is “hoping” that you WILL have more time to actually create longer spooky stories. Wait…..did I just say that
See what you’ve gone and done! Seriously though, I could read pages of your stories and time would have no meaning. Of course, you know how I feel about “time” now but I get happily lost in your stories John. However this one is wickedly creative. I’m glad you posted this blog. Hey, how’s your corn doing now? Better? Almost dry?
3 weeks away now!!! Moreover, if “things” happen NEXT WEEK, as much internet buzz is going around about in a hugely serious way, then starting Sunday, October is going to get really interesting. Remember John, take a break, step outside at night and LOOK UP and be still, take deeeeep breaths and just relax your vibration for a short bit. You might be surprised at “what” you see
Keep up the GREAT work my friend~~~

Thank you, Goldie. I’m not sure if my new stories will be longer, but I most certainly will be writing more this winter. And see, you are getting braver about venturing into Halloween darkness.
Come to think of it – I’m not sure if the word darkness and a smiley face should ever appear in the same sentence together!
The corn is doing much better, thanks for asking. It’s all dried out and I’m back to work on attaching it. I’ve erected a tarp over the top of it to keep out the rain. I’ll take a photo of my cornstalk work station and post it later tonight.

That would be great! It’s nice for all of us to see first hand the work/play that is involved on many levels for creating a spledid Halloween Masterpiece. Now add in Mother Nature and a straaaaaange 2008 and you have the ingredents for an unexpected October 2008. As mentioned though, at least it continues to throw variety your way so time must fly by. This has really been the best way to be a part of the process, in a way, yet be all over the world as we are. You have many different paths you travel down on Halloween time yet your super flexible and that makes all the difference in the world.
Now what’s this teasing talk about venturing into the Halloween darkness? Hmmm
I think I’m more like “Grandma’s” taste when it comes to Halloween. But yes, your scary stories do reach into a deeper pile of “darkness” so to speak that I didn’t know I had in me
