Halloween: Vintage Graphics Giveaway
July 8th, 2010 by John Wolfe
Update 8/20/10: This giveaway has closed. Congratulations to J. Allison of Atlanta, Georgia; Debby Reagan of Sanford, Maine and Barry “Paranormally Lucky” Huddleston (He’s been on a big winning streak at SOS lately!) of Florida. They each won a copy of the book, Halloween: Vintage Graphics. Congratulations, you three and thanks again to everyone who participated.
While July represents the heart of summer to most, I consider it to be the start of the “onseason” for all things Halloween-related, especially when it comes to home haunt prep. Speaking of summertime haunt prep: propelled by the nearly one-hundred degree temps in my workshop, the combination scent of duct tape, Elmer’s Glue and paint (all main supplies used in building my props) takes flight, saturating the air.
Ahhhh, inhaling a few deep breaths, my nostrils fill with the trifecta of groundbreaker corpse ingredients, instantly I’m put in the Halloween spirit. Granted, I have to wear a headband since I do as much sweating as prop building, but even a ton of perspiration and hot temps can’t ruin my mood (not to mention my contact high… just kidding).
So, to officially kick-off what I consider to be Halloween’s onseason, I’m hosting another giveaway. This time I’m giving three, brand new “Halloween: Vintage Holiday Graphics” books to three separate winners.
Here’s the description from Amazon:
“Trick-or-treat (smell my feet!). A guaranteed trip down memory lane, this book celebrates All Hallows’ Eve in American graphic and print media from the early 1900s to the ’60s. Featuring witches, ghouls, ghosts, and jack-o-lanterns, the scariest postcards and decorations, the silliest costumes and candid photos are collected here. With an introduction tracing the unexpected history of Halloween and its traditions, Vintage Halloween is a nostalgic tribute to one of America’s favorite holidays.”
If you’ve already entered the Haunted Histories Giveaway, that’s okay–you’re more than welcome to enter this one too; I just ask that you only enter each giveaway once per household. As we draw even closer to Halloween, I’m hoping to host several more overlapping giveaways to help put you in the mood for getting your ghoul on!
Please, only one entry per household. Duplicate entries from the same IP will be deleted. These giveaways are really based on the honor system, but I do my best to make it as fair as possible for everyone. There’s no catch here, everything is free–including payment of shipping and handling for “Halloween: Vintage Holiday Graphics”–I cover all costs. To be entered, leave a comment below showing your interest.
Depending on the volume of entries, comments may only be displayed under this post for a short time. As entries grow, I may remove comments to make it easier for visitors to scroll to the comment box and enter. However, I guarantee all entries will be saved in the order they are received.
When leaving a comment, be sure to include your correct e-mail address and be certain to keep track of your spam or bulk folder after the drawing closes, just in case. Each winner of the vintage Halloween graphics book will be contacted through the e-mail address that’s registered with their comment. I will never share addresses, provided by entrants, with any third parties and you’ll never receive unsolicited mail when entering.
This “Halloween: Vintage Holiday Graphics” contest will end at 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on August 14, 2010. All legitimate entries will then be assigned a number in the order they were received. Three numbers will be randomly drawn to determine the winners.
All three winners will then be notified, via the e-mail addresses they provided, no later than August 16th. If one, or all three don’t respond (with their shipping information) within two weeks, then one (two, or three) more number(s) will be drawn to determine the new winner(s). Upon receiving their permission, the winners’ names will be featured at the top of this post.
If you would like to see your Halloween or paranormal website or business promoted through SOS and you have some appropriately themed items to give away, please contact me.

Here we go! You are spoiling us, here, John. I am ecstatic about this one especially because I am a HUGE… I mean HUGE fan of vintage Halloween items of any type. I’m crossing my fingers big time to win this one!
July 8th, 2010 at 9:14 pm
Looks like an essential is missing from my orange and black library!
July 8th, 2010 at 9:52 pm
I can’t enter this one either! (already have this book) guess that means I’m a veteran home haunter now…I’m in a Halloween mood myself but I can’t handle these bloody high temperatures…I’m doing the small stuff inside (more candles for the cemetery, etc) don’t sweat too much!
July 8th, 2010 at 10:05 pm
Sweet contest! I’m going to tell all my blogging buddies… Now you’re in for it…
July 8th, 2010 at 11:05 pm
Another great give-a-way…..count me in!
July 8th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
In particular, it’s those rare graphics of the devil that really beguile me, but all vintage Halloween graphics tend to make me feel warm and cozy. I guess we have those long-ago artists to thank for giving our holiday it’s own color scheme of black and orange. Please enter me in the “Halloween: Vintage Holiday Graphics” book contest.

This is an awesome way to get everyone into the Halloween mood. The book sounds great and would love to have it. Keep up the great work and you really should get a fan in your work shop . Even though you might loose that contact high lol. I do have to agree with you, a prop builder has to have all three of those items Elmers glue, duct tape and paint. I get the chills just thinking about how much glue and paint and duct tape i have I want to go out to my garage and continue working on my props. And nothing feels better when friends and family members see what your building and say how great it looks.
July 9th, 2010 at 10:30 am
Oh, I would love to win this book. The cover is already amazing!
July 9th, 2010 at 10:53 am
Oh believe me dear friend, I’ve got my ghoul on big time! I realize for most they don’t get into the Halloween mood until October 1st but something about mid-summer through that my bones start quivering for all things spooky
No need to put me in the mood dearest, I’m ALWAYS in the mood
Oh by the way, PLEASE count me in for this incredible give-away John. I adore all things vintage. This was an excellent idea!
July 9th, 2010 at 12:45 pm
Yay! How cool is that? You know how much I love vintage Halloween graphics so this is right up my alley!! What a great choice, John!! A million thank yous for the chance to enter this giveaway!
July 9th, 2010 at 9:29 pm
Thank you for hosting all of these great giveaways. I’m so glad that I recently found this awesome site. Please count me in on this one, I love graphics & fonts, especially Halloweeen related ones! I can think of way too many uses for some vintage Halloween graphics. It’s never too early to start getting ready for October 31st. I totally agree with Goldie, I am always in the mood for Halloween!
Thanks again for the giveaway.
July 9th, 2010 at 11:48 pm
Another great giveaway- I’ve checked this book out from the library many times, and have always wanted to add it to my October library!
July 10th, 2010 at 7:29 pm
Paul,
Thanks! No, I don’t have an AC in the shop, but I do run a fan and keep a little cool that way, but when it’s really hot, I just run inside to air conditioning and then go right back out again. I repeat that over and over, sort of like the reverse of those polar bear guys.
Dr. Necropolis,
That’s okay, you guys are totally worth it! I always want to show my appreciation to you all as much as possible for being so supportive. Thanks for entering.
Dex,
That’s a library I’d love to see! I appreciate your entry, Dex.
Pam,
Wow, I picked two things in a row that you already own! I’ll keep plugging and hopefully I’ll give something out before Halloween that you don’t have yet.
That’s a good idea about doing what you can indoors until the temps cool down. I’m actually acclimating to the heat, it’s just hard to keep wiping sweat from my brow when wearing glasses and both hands are dipped in glue. LOL!
autumnforest,
Thanks! No worries, I’m lucky to be in for it from the cool people who visit your blog. They’re a great bunch.
Julie,
Right on!
trickortreat,
Oh yeah, those old devils are something else! The old-style witches get me in the same way the devils get you. I love seeing how the artists depicted their witchy ways. Thanks so much for entering.
ssflipo13,
I do have a fan that I keep rigged up out there, but often I have to point it away from me as it blows a lot of the delicate mache work right out of my hands or causes the wet paper towels to wrap around themselves. I probably should just open the door and hope for a breeze, but I like having privacy in the neighborhood as I create my sinister stuff.
I hear you about those key ingredients for prop building! It’s weird, but I never thought common home improvement items would give me such a strong Halloween vibe. The more Halloweens that go buy and the more props I build, the more I feel that way about stuff like duct tape, glue and paint.
Thanks for participating in the giveaway!
Camila F.,
Welcome to Season of Shadows and thanks for entering.
Goldie,
Happy to hear you’re already getting your ghoul on.
Thanks so much for participating!
Camile,
It’s my pleasure. And thank you for being a part of it.
GHFans,
Thank you for your kind words about SOS. I’m glad you’re enjoying it and am happy to have you here. Very cool: between you, me and Goldie, there’s a lot of “getting ghouls on” and it’s only July!
Bryan,
Thanks so much for your kind feedback and for entering! I usually don’t buy things for myself very often, but after giving this book away, I may pick one up for me, too.

YOU KNOW YOU’RE A HAUNTAHOLIC WHEN …
——————————————————————————–
you’re pestered all year by kids who want to know what the theme for THIS year is.
you find yourself thinking that one corpse is more attractive than another.
you get more excited over a fog machine than a dirty movie.
you have more help at your haunt than necessary for an old-fashioned barn raising.
you have more than ten sound effect CD’s.
you have names for the skeletons in your closet.
you play spooky music all year round.
you spend more on one Halloween than on your spouse’s birthday, Christmas or anniversary.
you try to make Fido look like a hellhound every Halloween.
your neighbors avoid you a full month before Halloween.
your garage, basement and attic contain nothing but Halloween props.
the only candelabra you own is in a spider web motif.
there is a monster under your bed because your attic/basement/garage is full.
your electric bill higher in October than in December.
the family dog ignores masked individuals breaking into your house.
instead of giving your child a cat or dog, you give them a gargoyle to play with.
the guy at the paint counter at the hardware store sees you coming and starts stacking gallon cans of flat black on the counter.
you go to “Goth Night” at a local club, armed with a pocketful of “volunteer recruitment” flyers.
you can’t watch a horror movie without jotting down ideas every two minutes.
you’re nervous about taking rolls of film in to be developed, for fear the police might show up at your house looking for the corpses.
you have a room in your house reserved for special props/projects, and won’t allow anyone in there because it’ll “spoil the Halloween surprise!”
people refuse to walk into your house at night.
people refuse to walk into your house in broad daylight!
you have a customized license plate that has something to do with Halloween.
you start actually setting up your yard haunt in August…
you judge homes by how well a haunt could be set up in them.
your toddler’s first words are “TRICK OR TREAT!”
it’s not uncommon to see a “Barbie” doll hanging in a noose in you’re daughters room.
your teenager wants his/her “own” coffin….
you start checking out the Halloween Online family of web site in June every year!

Love the cam idea with music to put you in the mood..also love vintage..anything! Thanks as always!
July 12th, 2010 at 9:17 am
Glad I signed up for Season of Shadows, since there aren’t many like-minded Halloween lovers in my immediate circle of friends or co-workers. Your blog keeps me connected. I saw the comments above about favorite home repair items, and I have to say right now my personal favorite is spray foam insulation. I have put it to good use for 3 different props. Makes great intestines! I do love vintage Halloween art, so I hope I win!
July 12th, 2010 at 11:46 am
Hey John, what a great idea. Count me in.
July 12th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
Barry,
Those are great, man! Right up my alley. Did you post those as an entry on your site? If not, you should. I especially loved the one about the Barbie doll and also the one about the fog machine exciting you more than a dirty movie! It sounds like you’re starting to catch the home haunt bug, too. Thanks for entering and as always, for making your entry entertaining!
Fiend4Halloween,
I appreciate that about the cam. And thanks for taking part in the giveaway. This is such a cool book, I’m going to have to get one for myself now for sure!
Anna,
That’s awesome, Anna, I’m happy to hear Season of Shadows keeps that Halloween vibe alive and provides a sense of community! For me, making that connection with visitors is the most important thing I could ever accomplish with my work at SOS.
I, too, have used spray foam for prop work. I like to use it from time to time to sculpt my zombie’s ribs. I wish you all the best with your prop building and I hope to hear from you again soon. Thanks for entering.
S.K. Austin,
Thanks, I appreciate it and thanks for entering.
July 12th, 2010 at 5:27 pm

I would like to be entered into the give away! Thanks!

Thanks for entering, J. Allison! Likewise, I enjoy hearing from Halloween fans who live it and think about it well in advance of October.
August 9th, 2010 at 8:55 am
Thank you John. I also want to mention, I’m a graphic designer and would absolutely love to add this to my collection! I would have MUCH fun with my favorite holiday with this addition. I’m even thinking of making some real spooky halloween decorations for my home this year with my creations! If I do, I’ll be sure to share some pics with ya!
August 9th, 2010 at 1:58 pm
Very cool, Debby. Thank you for participating in the giveaway. And please share your decorations with me. If you post ‘em online, just shoot the link over. I’d love to take a look.
