Headless Horseman Projection
January 29th, 2010 by John WolfeI knew there was a reason I liked Meijer grocery stores. After discovering their really cool Halloween commercial, I’ve now found their awesome headless horseman promotion event. Basically, a team rides around major cities projecting an animated image of the headless horseman, complete with his flaming jack-o-lantern, onto each city’s landmarks and buildings.
This 2008 headless horseman vid was made to look like the team’s involved in some sort of clandestine operation… very imaginative!
This 2009 installment was designed with a ’50s horror movie-like beginning and a SAW-like ending. At least I think that’s what they were going for at the end — I never saw “SAW.”

My son is an art major in college and one of his fascinations (among many) are public performance art. That is the most amazing and creative one I’ve ever seen! I think that’s a brilliant idea! Imagine how exciting that was to see it on the walls of the buildings. Oh, it gave me tingles. It must have been quite a good quality project–it came out beautifully. I’ve thought of projecting onto my house during Halloween but never came up with just what would work. This inspired me. You find the greatest stuff!

Knowing you and gore dear one, you aren’t missing a thing with the movie SAW, trust me
These projection videos reminded me of something I saw advertised for months here where I live back in 2008. We had several billboards advertising the “Moon Projection” for some kind of beer. Here’s how it was supposed to work: upon the next full moon a beer advertisement would appear on the face of the entire moon. Of course, knowing me the way you do I had a few alarms that went off regarding this but I found it really ticked me off….like a form of space pollution via advertising for beer! Give me a break. I could hear them now, the ET’s that is, “those silly humans………look at what they’re doing now!”
Thankfully it never got off the ground, so to speak but it makes one wonder, if they can really do such a thing as a projection image on the moon, I could see where holographics image in the sky aren’t that far off. YOU know what I mean

Hmmm…that’s kind of creepy.
The First SAW was pretty good. Now, after a ton of sequels, it’s starting to become a bore.

autumnforest,
I was impressed with how amazing the projection looked, too. With all the different surfaces and the distances involved, it never really diminished in quality. I’ve seen projectors for outdoor home use during the holidays. It’s a shame they don’t have a slide in those things that feature dolls! That would work perfectly with your theme.
Goldie,
The idea for the beer ad reminds me of Batman’s bat signal or Jackie Gleason’s face, on the moon, during the intro to “The Honeymooners!” Maybe those things were their inspiration. If that guy who claims he owns the moon had gotten wind of this advertising campaign, there would have been hell to pay! LOL. Have you heard about him?
Andrea,
It’s really good to hear from you! How many sequels have they made, like six?
