In Search of Ghosts

January 13th, 2010 by John Wolfe

As a young child in the late ’70s and early ’80s, “In Search of” was my favorite TV program. The fact it gave me nightmares (especially the Dracula episode) was an added bonus to the regularly featured supernatural subject matter. ;)

This particular installment was In Search of’s official nod to ghosts, although it wasn’t their only one, as they did follow-up with more ghostly programing during subsequent seasons. In Search of Ghosts focuses on paranormal expert, Hans Holzer, and his investigation into a haunted home along Maine’s coastline.

Wow! That’s amazing. The other day I was trying to list my favorite Bigfoot documentaries from TV shows and I was writing up “In Search of” (the new version with the dude from X-Files) and I was getting all nostalgic for the original “In Search Of” series with Leonard Nemoy’s haunting voice. Okay, now I gotta find out if that’s out there on video somewhere. Those used to make the hairs stand on end. They knew how to draw out the tension with the right sounds and his voice and really good writing. You don’t need CGI effects when you have Leonard Nemoy and a scriptwriter!

Speaking of Bigfoot, I used to love the “Boggy Creek” movie! In fact, I have a copy on DVD in my room. The part where the guy’s sitting on the toilet doing his business, and Bigfoot comes in after him, always cracks me up a little. :) I never saw the new version of “In Search of,” but I’ve heard of it. It used to run on Sci-Fi, didn’t it?

Now, looking back on the original series, I think even the vintage look to the footage adds to the creepiness. From what I was able to find, “In Search of” has never been released on DVD, but I’m not sure about VHS.
