Jack-O-Lantern 1: Straws

March 5th, 2009 by John Wolfe

Inspiration struck since my last post and I decided to begin the “Jack-O-Lantern a Day” project. I’m not sure how long it’s going to run – hopefully, until September or October. By then, I’ll be in full Halloween yard haunt prep and I probably won’t have time to create the pumpkin faces. The goal is to make a jack-o-lantern each day out of a brand new medium. The focus is on being quick and creative, not on perfection. This first pumpkin was built from flexible straws.

If this post inspires you to undertake a similar Halloween project-a-day, please let me know. I’d be happy to post a blog entry about your work.

What an interesting idea… I don’t know if I can be that creative every day for the next 250 something days…. but I am dying to follow your journey, and see what you come up with!

    Dawn,

I thought about that too. I’m asking people to give me ideas for mediums to use on Twitter. So far, I have about ten. :) I’m open to suggestions if you have any. I’ve only looked at four images on the Skull-A-Day site. It would be a great place to do research, but I prefer to try and be as original on the mediums used as possible. No doubt I’ll inadvertently duplicate some of the same things, as there are only so many items you can use.

I’m looking forward to doing it. I tend to be very harsh on myself concerning what I create. By knowing I have to get one done each day, there’s not a lot of time for judgment.

Ooooo, how bout one out of jellybeans? I know your color blind and all but those JellyBelly beans would be great to use and bring such brilliant colors to the pumpkin. I was thinking it would be fun to carve out a canelope mellon….seeing as how it’s orange ;-) I’ve got a huge box of paper clips you could use….put a light on them just right and they would shimmer of silver. There are tons of things you can use. I have a huge list in my head if you REALLY want to hear them ;-)

    Goldie,

Jelly beans are a great idea. I could just make the pumpkin out of black jelly beans (or try and guess which is orange) and fill in the eyes and teeth with yellow beans. :) Working with fruit is another great idea. If I’m going to use fresh food, then I need to find something I’m willing to eat after carving it. I don’t like to waste anything that hasn’t reached expiration. I’m all ears about your ideas. Please, give me a holler and let me know.
