Jack-O-Lantern
October 19th, 2008 by John Wolfe
Tonight, I whittled out the first jack-o-lantern to replace the ceramic pumpkin on the table. When I carve, I always prefer to make the corners of the mouth stretch almost as high as the tops of the eyes. This weakens the upper portion of the face, because it doesn’t leave a lot of pumpkin intact. After a few days it starts to curl under nicely, since there’s not much resistance holding back the mouth. The extreme curling causes the pumpkin lid to pop a little, allowing light to flicker out the jagged rooftop.

Very nice carving job!
In addition, I love how you captured this on camera with the candle light just so peering through the openings. In the photo there is a perfect glow to the inside. Actually, this is a rather stricking photo John and looks perfect set against the color design of SOS, then again, most of them do. Your ideas pertaining to the later stages of the pumpkin are well thought out and should make a nice effect come the right time. Very nice carving job indeed
