Monster Art

August 16th, 2010 by John Wolfe

A HUGE thanks to Ethan for turning me on to some great, retro illustrations by Gojin Ishihara! According to the site, Pink Tentacle, Ishihara’s work was featured in many childrens books about supernatural creatures and monsters throughout the ’70s. The image I’ve included is a creature known as the ceiling dweller and was part of the “Illustrated Book of Japanese Monsters.” While I can totally appreciate Gojin’s work now, a part of me wishes I had seen these as a boy. Monsters were a huge part of my life then and I could easily get lost in the details of artwork depicting crazy looking creatures for hours at a time.

Thanks again, Ethan. And to see more of these awesome monster images, checkout Pink Tentacle. They’ve uploaded thirty-six of the ghastly things.

Wonderful, now I’m going to have nightmares tonight about monsters or ghosts in my paranormal bedroom. I have the strangest things happen in there as well as sounds like I’ve never heard before. I often feel eyes are upon me while I’m trying to wind down to sleep. With an image like that, I’m doomed tonight ;-)

Would it be alright if I also thanked Ethan? As is his website just blew me away this last weekend and I found the most outstanding art work on his page. I’ve never seen talent quite like that when it comes to painting, drawing and CGIs. Knowing the very high standards Ethan holds himself to when it comes to work, I would imagine that any link he shares with you John is one hell of an amazing link my dear friend, is it not? Ethan is a very special soul, just like you ;-)

Thank you for providing the link John and sharing the spookiness with us all. Oh, I was at Michael’s this weekend (guilty as charged…I just had to stand in the Halloween aisle) and for the first time EVER, it’s official – Christmas is now mixed in with Halloween stuff. I couldn’t believe it. Snowmen and Christmas tree stuff not far from the Halloween section. I’m still waiting to see Christmas things as early as the 4th of July ;-) I wish they did that for Halloween cause that holiday NEVER EVER seems to last long enough for me.

Very stylish and cool. Nice find!

I would have loved that book when I was a kid, but I dont think my parents would have been to thrilled by it. I might not have liked it to much after dark myself.

    Cool art, love the paintings.

    Goldie,

I sorta took it easy on you visually when posting the ceiling dweller, especially considering what’s waiting over at Pink Tentacle. :) Hope you had a good night’s sleep… muahahaha! I could always trade you sleeping quarters if you like. As is my usual custom, in the summer, I sleep on a mattress on the floor (it’s a long story) and I found a couple spiders sharing the floor with me a few nights ago. One was weird looking — had a lot of white on its legs and body. Seriously though, I know sleep can be an issue for you sometimes, so I hope you are getting some good rest.

Absolutely, please feel free to thank Ethan. I love it when you guys communicate with one another on here. In fact, with the plans I have for expanding on Season of Shadows this winter, everyone will be able to directly communicate a lot more freely without me being in the middle all the time. And, yeah, if Ethan sends me a link, then I’m all over it!

I need to get my tail to Michael’s! I’m jonesing to buy some cool little Halloween knickknacks to add to the boxes and envelopes that I use for my giveaways. Don’t feel too bad about Christmas stuff already being out. Last August or September, K-Mart or Sears (can’t remember which) was already advertising on a local television station for doing Christmas layaway! And one of the local small towns next to me always has their Christmas street lamp decor up by Halloween! Using that logic, they should decorate the city for Halloween (which they never do) the last week of August. Of course, I’d be cool with that if they did!

    autumnforest,

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed checking them out.

    Ethan,

I was lucky in the fact my parents were always okay with my creepy and spooky interests as a kid. But I’d totally share in that after dark thing with you. In fact, I had that experience a lot. I scared myself many, many nights during my childhood. I can’t count how often I didn’t fall asleep until 3 or 4 in the morning (on a school night) because I was keeping an eye out for the boogieman who I assumed was taking the form of a ghost.

    Julie,

Awesome! Glad you liked ‘em. Thanks for commenting.

Reminds me of some of the Japanese art I collected as a child in Hawaii

  7. John Wolfe Says:

Wow, what a great place to grow up! Do you still have some of the art, Barry? I’ve pretty much saved everything from my childhood and really want to go through it all one of these days — there’s no telling what’s in those boxes!

  8. ssflipo13 Says:

thanks for sharing this . Now I`m going to have to get back to my childhood mode and search out all the monsters I was interested in. And more thanks to you sharing this with us. I love monsters!

I was the exact same way after seeing these. This artwork totally brought back my childhood fascination with the creepy crawlies! :) Thank you, ssflipo13.
