Music to Corpse By

May 21st, 2011 by John Wolfe

I was first turned on to the foreign, dark ambient music scene through raison d’etre, via Pumpkinrot, several years ago, and ever since I’ve enjoyed listening to many artists in the genre. As time’s gone on, I’ve found my favorite stylings to be dark ambient combined with chant-like sounds.

Speaking of which, today’s vid features just that. The project is called, “Arduinna”; the song is “Memento Mori”; and the album (though there’s no CD released yet) is “Weris.”

I’d love to feature this track in the Halloween Radio section. I’ve been in touch with the creator of Arduinna and I’m keeping my fingers crossed I receive permission to bring the song on-board the player.

Since this type of music puts me in that creative spooky mood, I’m headed out to the shop to get back to “corpsing” Little Grim. I’m hoping to have him finished come mid-summer, so I can post him in a giveaway before Halloween.

Only here could I express such a thing and not seem really creepy but listening to this track actually lulled me to sleep. Two things I adore in spiritual music: sacred chanting softly and a steady tune at a certain frequency. The on going tone reminds me of a DNA frequency on yt I enjoy zoning out to and freeing myself from my body. Leave it to you to find it :-)

Oh boy I thought the competition was thick with your recent give-away but once you put little Grim up, the competition is going to sky rocket. I’m pleased to hear your feeling so well that your out in the shop again and doing what you love. Big improvement and I send you my well wishes for continues strength and health my friend.

    Goldie,

Glad you enjoyed the music, my friend! Thanks for checking it out.

Getting back in the shop has been a big part of what’s helping me to feel better. It gets me in the flow and a creative groove where time stands still on everything else. I have a feeling I’ll be spending the majority of my summer prop building considering how therapeutic it’s proven to be just in the last couple of days.

After I finish Little Grim, I’m going to start a groundbreaker and hopefully bring it in on time to give away before Halloween, too.

thanks for sharing. I really like that kind of music as well. Always good for setting the mood. Looking forward to hearing more of it.

    Matt,

Awesome! Glad you liked it. I’d love to feature a lot more dark ambient music like this in the Halloween Radio’s player. There are several groups I have in mind to contact.

    John,
Another great pick. This music does get ones creative juices flowing. Now I want to go and draw another pumpkin picture for my daughter. She also is a collector of weird and creepy things. I don`t know if you`ve heard of the “Living Dead Dolls” , well she has a few of those and other weird trinkets and nightmare before xmas items and a few things I made. I love listening to the Nox Arcana Blackthorn Asylum CD along with the Theater of Illusion CD , while I`m working.

Ok and seeing that this is a group of well rounded people let me ask this.
I know this will be different because I have never heard of or seen anyone work with this medium before but, while at work on my lunch I have been working with wax. This wax we use for shooting molds of rings to be cast in silver or gold. well I started to play around and made a scarecrow with a bat on it`s arm. I would like to coat it with something that will harden, like a spray maybe. Does anyone know of anything I could use to preserve my little wax sculpture? Instead of having it cast in any type of metal . There is a great chance that it will be broken in transport or it will not be able to be cast. I don`t know if this will work or if you will allow the web link but here goes, remove this if you do not allow it John. photos of my wax art and drawing of a pumpkin.

sorry link didn`t work. But maybe someone can still help.

Goldie , you are right , this music is great for out of body traveling.

    ssflipo,

Very cool — some of the stuff your daughter’s into reminds me of Wednesday Addams and her interests. :) I’m a huge Addams Family fan. Happy to hear you’re enjoying the Nox CD’s.

Someone may have a better suggestion than this, ssflipo, but there is a product called “Sculpt and Coat” or it might be “Sculpt or Coat”, I can’t remember exactly. It creates a hardened finish on a lot of different art mediums. I’m not sure if it can be used on wax, but I don’t see why not. I don’t have the companies info in front of me, but you may want to do a search for it. If you can’t find it, or if it’s no longer available, just let me know. I have a whole container of it still in the box that I haven’t used yet and could send it to you if you like. I bought it a few years ago and thought it might come in handy for prop work at some point.

    Glad you liked Arduinna’s music.

  8. Camile Says:

Ssflipo, I’m on Facebook and I’d love to see your wax work! If you do a search for Camile Coyne please ‘friend’ me if you’d like so I can see your pics. :) I think John’s suggestion of Sculpt and Coat, or whatever it is called, sounds great and I’m going to look for some myself just to experiment with. I’d love to see a “how to” if you’re up for making one. Learning to work in new mediums always gives me a thrill and gets my Halloween blood moving more swiftly. John taught me and all of us how to work in paper mache in a way I never would have dreamed possible and I’m so wildly grateful to him!

John, I can’t even begin to tell you how thrilled I am to hear that you are back out working in your shop!! That does my heart such good!!! I think this song would be an excellent addition to your radio list! You know me- more Season of Shadows, in any respect, is always a fabulous thing!! So more music in the player?!? Sounds brilliant to me!!!
BTW- I also found that this is good music to hand sew to as well and *that* is a huge compliment! For me, too many lyrics is distracting and the music that is the best to sew to is music like this! It’s perfect! I’m making a Fortuny pleated silk scarf for the little girl who lives next door to us who is Kieran’s fave. play friend. :) Now I’m off to listen to your whole host of songs on the player and sew some more….. thank you, John!!! You are the best!!

  9. ssflipo Says:

    John,
Thank you for the info on the sculpt or coat. I found it online and it seems to be what I need. Thanks for the offer of sending it to me but I`ll pass. You keep that for your props. I`ll just run down to the nearest hobby store and pick up a small container of it.
Addams family wow what a blast from the past. I used to watch that all the time. Did you know that someone reproduced the staircase . And how it lifts up and spot stayed under their. lol Good memories. Thanks

    Camile,

I’m glad you’ve enjoyed seeing how I create my quirky style of mache! I guess the “shredding technique” I use is pretty unorthodox when it comes to laying paper towels and glue, but it’s a fun way of creating groundbreaker skin… plus, it just gives them that sinewy look I enjoy. :D

Thanks, Camile. Getting my hands back in the mache mix has been really awesome and a nice way of channeling my energy and thoughts right now. It’s like Goldie said, creating props is something I’ve always enjoyed and is something I’m passionate about, but I didn’t realize just how incredibly therapeutic it was for me until recently.

Plus, knowing I’ll be giving a prop away that I’m working on gives me a whole other special kind of incentive. Building corpses for Halloween night is way cool, but building for the purpose of hopefully brightening someone else’s day is even more rewarding. Speaking of brightening someone else’s day, look at how kind you are to be hand sewing Kieran’s friend a silk scarf! That’s fantastic!

So glad to hear you enjoyed Memento Mori and that you’re still enjoying the Halloween radio section too.

I couldn’t remember when it was taking place, but I thought you and K might be paying Marie Laveu (sp?) a visit today. :)

    ssflipo,

Awesome. Glad you found it and it’s available in your area. I’m really bad about checking my Facebook account… just never really been able to get in the groove with Facebook, but please friend me (I’m listed as John Wolfe, but my page goes by seasonofshadows) and send me the link to your pics, too, if you don’t mind. Please let us know how the Sculpt or Coat works for you.

I didn’t know there was a reproduction of the staircase, but I bet there’s also one out there of the entire Addams Family home. Hmm, that gives me an idea… off to You Tube for a search. :)

  11. Camile Says:

I think the reproduction with Spot and the lift up stair case you might be talking about is “Munster Mansion” which, ironically enough, is in the small Texas town where I live- Waxahachie. Small world, eh?!? Here’s a link: http://www.munstermansion.com/home.html
They do charity events, usually on Halloween, which is of course my busiest time of year so I’ve never been there but I hear it’s pretty neat.

John, we’ll be off to see Madame Laveau in mid-June. I’m so excited I can hardly stand it!!!!!!! Eeeeee!!!!!

  12. John Wolfe Says:

    Camile,

I’m excited for you guys too! I haven’t traveled out of New Mexico since 1997, so it’s high time I go someplace, and seeing Marie’s stomping grounds sounds fantastic to me. I’m looking forward to your pictures.
