“Scary” Toys
December 24th, 2009 by John WolfeConsidering, in just a few short hours, a lot of kids will be ripping into their presents, hoping cool toys await them beneath each and every piece of ribbon and wrapping paper; I wanted to feature some of my favorite childhood toys. As you may have already guessed, I was partial to playthings of the “scary” or “spooky” variety.
I owned one of the toys from the following retro commercials: “I Vant to Bite Your Finger.” The rest were on my wish list, but never quite made it under the tree. This wasn’t really “Santa’s” fault, but instead was due to the fact I always padded my list quite full of wants. Santa’s helpers had to audit that list down to a more manageable task nearly every Christmas.

Oh, how I wanted creepy crawlers! I used to go to friends’ houses to play with theirs. My parents were not toy buyers. In fact, I’m probably such an exceptional gift giver because I know what NOT to get people. Hee hee. That “I vant to bite your finger” game was wicked. I don’t remember that one, but jeez, I’d love to find a vintage set of that! Cool! Great finds! Hope you have a super Xmas. When we start 2010, we can get excited for 2010 Halloween-wahoo! This next year, I’m letting someone else give the party, but I’m going to do a lot of ghost hunting events hopefully and plan the next scary doll display–hoping to expand the creepy doll theme to really freak the kids. The window display of it this year freaked kids out. A lot of them just stayed there after I gave them candy, just staring and pointing at the propped up dolls staring at them. I love this stuff! I might do something with a doll on a remote control car and crack the garage door a bit so I can see kids coming up and chase them in the driveway with it… hmm… Can’t wait to hear what you have planned for the next big holiday–Halloween!

Happy Holidays to you dear friend and congratulations again on the immense expansion of SeasonofShadows. You have accomplished MANY great things this year John and I’m extremely proud of you
This was a perfect entry for Christmas eve; still keeping the Christmas theme for children and toys yet honoring the spooky inside of you. Most excellent blend dear one, nicely done.
Can’t say I ever saw any of those commercials in the past during Halloween time. I did have the play-doh and mat to go along but it wasn’t Halloween theme. That would have been bitchin’…I could have made some wicked stuff
I adore these trips down memory lane though. I was actually thinking about the progression of my bicycles when I was younger in the 70′s from the big banana seat bikes to my wonderful blue 10 speed I got at Christmas in ’78. Good times……………good times indeed. Thank you for sharing this and for making SeasonofShadows the most phenomenal Halloween website online!!! Happiest of New Years to you and SoS as well

autumnforest,
I was the exact same way with Creepy Crawlers. I either had to play with it at friends’ houses or else I lived vicariously through the kids on the commercials. Though the Easy Bake Oven wasn’t a “scary” toy, I had a similar fascination with it. I think my parents steered clear of anything that got hot. And, for good reason. I probably would have burned myself on a daily basis if I owned either one of those toys.
I’ve been thinking the same thing about 2010! Speaking of your Halloween display, I loved your creepy doll photos from 2009. Everything turned out awesome! The RC car sounds like it would have them running in terror. One year, I used the garage door as a means to scare trick-or-treaters as well. I wore a werewolf-like glove and ran my hand under the door as the kids walked by.
Hope you guys had a great Christmas!
Goldie,
Thank you so much. It’s been a great experience seeing SOS expand in many ways during 2009! I, too, had Play-Doh products, but I never had any of their “spooky” line. As far as bikes go, I always stuck with my BMX throughout the early to mid-eighties. Prior to that, I was tooling around in my Big Wheel during the 70s. I bet you remember those.
Thanks again, Goldie, for the well wishes, both for me and Season of Shadows. I hope you and your family had a great Christmas and will have a phenomenal 2010.
