Skeleton Funkin
December 11th, 2008 by John Wolfe
For some reason, I seem to have a “Halloween: the lost years” situation going on with this post. When I try to recall October 31st of 1990, ’91 and ’93, I draw a complete blank. This bothers me, since I usually have the ability to remember the most minute and obscure details of my life. When you consider my love affair with Samhain, this compounds the oddity of having zero recall. I do remember it snowing on Halloween day of ’92, but outside of that, not much else stands out. Maybe this is also why I don’t remember “Flying Funkins.”
According to Matt, over at X-Entertainment, Funkins were popular during the early 90’s and consisted of a balloon inflated head, coat hanger shoulders and a garbage bag torso. He located a Skeleton Funkin in pristine shape; some fifteen years post production, and put it together for the photo in this post.
Apparently, Funkins also used to come as a pumpkin, ghost, and flying vampire.

Yeah, the pumpkins are still really common here. Some understand the concept of how to make it fuller, where others do not and pack it only half full and then wonder why it doesn’t look like a pumpkin. I guess some people just don’t think.
WHAT……YOU, who can practically recall being born, how it felt, the hospital, cartoons from the 70′s that I can’t even remember, toys my bro played with and the official terms BUT your “blank” regarding the early 90′s???? Wow, I had to go over that twice and make sure I read it right John. That must really get your goat! I wonder why the blank out and of all times, Halloween!!!

So, can you still find the official Funkin pumpkin brand on store shelves in your neck of the woods? Based on what Matt was saying, I thought they weren’t making them any longer. Maybe it’s like the Halloween Egg Nog – only available in certain locations. To this day, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Flying Funkin, here in New Mexico.
I know, I know – it’s weird that I can’t recall those Halloween nights. I can remember other things from the early 90′s, just not Halloween. I think the early 90′s have many holes in them for me because those were my high school years and you know how I felt about that.
