Subservience

June 21st, 2010 by John Wolfe

Though this piece is meant to show symbolically how the lifestyles of the “elite” are often built on the backs of the working class, I chose to view it in a slightly different way. With its post-apocalyptic scenery and dialogue free exchanges, I thought it had a great creepiness factor to it, and I became lost in that vibe as opposed to seeing it solely as a commentary on political, economic or social institutions (though it hits the mark there as well).

Wow. Powerful video. The tone is definitely creepy and dark, but the message behind it is equally as dark and intense. Accurate as well, without a doubt.

Sorry to self-promote, but I just launched my Halloween based site. Please check it out. I hope to have it become a regular visit for many of you as SOS is already for us all.

Wow, that was dark. The truth is that the rich do treat the poor as expendable resources, and dehumanize them all the time. Hell, the middle class do it to the poor too. Where I live there is a big gap between income levels.(I am on the wrong side of it.) The wealthy people who come in our store, increasingly, are rude or just act like you are part of the wallpaper. If you are clearly rushing to help a large number of people and more are waiting. These people act like it is your fault they have to wait. Affluence in our nation doesn’t just keep our wealth from helping the poor in other nations, it causes them to act like self entitled fascist in this one. Sorry, had a little rant there. :)

fascinating film and I agree that it is creepy from all perspectives! unfortunately, as Dr. Necropolis said, accurate. makes me recall that instance when Prince Charles was in one of the East European countries and they didn’t have “Hellman’s mayonnaise” for his sandwich. his way out of this quandary was to have some flown over pronto from England. A very sad state of affairs indeed. the bleakness of the landscape also gives one pause, especially in light of the recent and ongoing oil spill…how much more is ol’ mother nature willing to take?

    Dr. Necropolis,

No worries about self-promoting, I’m more than happy to have Season of Shadows serve as a means to help connect my visitors to other sites throughout the online Halloween community. I wish you all the best with your website!

    Ethan,

Going back to our shared experience with retail, I know where you’re coming from. I’ve seen wealthy people as well as so-called attractive people receive far better treatment in retail establishments than others who may not have been as obviously well off or “good looking.” That’s why, when I worked retail, I went out of my way to help everyone no matter what. I didn’t give a rat’s ass if someone was pretty or obviously trying to flaunt their wealth, they received the exact same treatment (from me) as anyone else who entered the store. I looked at it like this (and still do): everyone deserves respect and no one is more worthy than anyone else.

That’s cool about the rant, I understand and feel where you’re coming from.

    Pam,

Great to hear from you! Your comment reminds me of a line from that old song, In the Year 2525: “We’ve taken everything this old Earth can give, and we ain’t put back nothing, whoa whoa.” Most of us little guys are out here trying to recycle and conserve and then you have BP come along and pollute so horrendously that our efforts have been completely eclipsed. The oil continues to spill out, meanwhile the BP exec(s) take a vacation!

Though it means very little in the big picture, that’s why I’ve become a vegetarian and am recycling, composting and growing my own garden. Overall, at least in my little space, I know I’m doing my best to reduce my footprint and I’m not contributing to bleeding the Earth and its resources (including living beings such as animals) dry.

Thanks so much for your comment.
