The Halloween Hanging Tree
September 22nd, 2008 by John WolfeI was looking online tonight for some pattern carved jack-o-lantern images. I only used stencils one year- Halloween ’99. While I enjoyed them, I’m still partial to the traditional jagged cut style (like many haunters I know). Not to mention, the stencils take more time- especially when you’re carving six to ten pumpkins. I’d rather spend that time on other areas of my haunt. Nevertheless, I still enjoy seeing the creative creations designed by stencil enthusiasts.
The two images in this post (The Hanging Tree as I call it and the Scarecrow), both originally came from Zombiepumpkins, but I found them at Knoxnews. In my opinion, The Hanging Tree has to be one of the best pattern-carved jack-o-lanterns I’ve come across. It’s not as intricate or fancy as some, but it has such classic elements. They’re beautifully carved and back lit by this eerie glow. Just a perfect encapsulation of the feeling of Halloween!

Allow me a bit of a rant here because this relates to something that’s bugged me for a while – Those are very cool. I especially like the hanging tree, but I generally can’t stand the pattern carving. When it comes to my jack o’lanterns (ok, Halloween in general) I’m a hard core traditionalist. I especially can’t stand it when the pattern is something completely unrelated to Halloween. Yoda?! Scooby-Doo!? Is that a Care Bear!!?? WTF!?
It’s not so bad when it’s a twist on the traditional face like this http://is.gd/30qQ but otherwise, no Nascar drivers faces please.
Ahhhhhhhhh, feel better.

No problem, Johnny, rant away. When it comes to some stencil patterns…I feel your pain.
To each their own of course, but I too have never found the appeal in “cutsie” or off-the-Halloween topic carved pumpkins. One of mine, last year, ended up with a little too friendly of a grin- I guarantee that will be taken care of this year! LoL.
