The Mummy’s Bracelet
August 13th, 2010 by John WolfeFour years prior to Bobby (Boris) Picket’s “Monster Mash,” Lee Ross was doing a little monster rock and roll of his own. “The Mummy’s Bracelet” (1958), tells the tale of an angry mummy extracting his revenge on a couple for taking his bling.

I first heard this last year on Sirius-XM’s Halloween channel and I was immediately hooked on the tune… told you guys I like campy Halloween stuff just as much as the spooky.

John, you always find the interesting and unusual. You are the master.

How cute is that song! This is my first time ever hearing this charming tune. Oh, I’m so glad you shared this with us all. It’s a catchy little tune and I was glued to the story all along. Was your first time hearing this song from XM or is that a tune that you “might” have danced around to when you were 5
More spookiness: While listening to the story, I was gazing at the 45 and yet again taken back to my youth. I haven’t owned a record player for…oh my gosh yikes, 3 decades!!! Wow. The feelings you bring out of me John, I tell ya
Oh and I checked out Mary’s show today. The episode where they’re at Salem was something else. I also have always had some kind of pull to that moment in time and at that location. I felt for the mom when she saw her daughter’s name and death place from a previous life. I’ll leave my other thoughts for you in private though. It was a good show, both of them. You did this to me with “Parenthood” as well, of which I read will be returning in the fall line-up. Yaaaaaaa. Great find darin’ all the way around.

autumnforest,
Thanks, my friend. I’m thinking blogging might work like the old saying: ‘you are what you eat.’ If that’s so, then maybe you are what you blog, too. Seeing how I love to post the strange and unusual… well, can you see where I’m going with this.
Goldie,
Last October was my very first time hearing The Mummy’s Bracelet–I swear.
But since then, I’ve probably heard this song a few hundred times because I replay the Sirius-XM Halloween programming quite a bit. When the webcam goes on in the shop, you’ll probably be hearing more of The Mummy’s Bracelet, too. And now that you’ve seen Mary Knows Best, you’ll be able to recognize her voice when she tells her Halloween stories during my XM playback. She tells two stories over the course of the four hours I’ve recorded. One’s about a practical joke she played on her cousin during Halloween ’96 (Playing practical jokes, now you can see another reason why I’m such a fan of hers!) and another is about a seance she attended.
Speaking of Mary Occhino, I’m glad you enjoyed the show. Her and her daughter’s Salem trip was very interesting! I got to visit Salem as a boy, but I’d love to go back now as an adult. Thanks for letting me know Parenthood’s coming back, too.
And I’m the same way about record players and 8-track decks. Although, my grandparents held on to their hi-fi and 8-track player until the ’90s, so I have been able to enjoy the old technology a little more recently. They just started using CDs about ten years ago. Well, my grandma uses them. My grandpa doesn’t really listen to music much anymore.
When you get a chance, swing back by the ” A Haunting Halloween Giveaway” post. Ethan left you a comment with a link to his Deviant Art page so you could check out his cool artwork.
The Frog Queen,
Thank you for checking it out and commenting. The campy stuff is a slippery slope for me–the more I embrace, the more I want to continue embracing.
Maybe some cutesy Halloween stuff is like a gateway drug for those who are deemed hardcore Halloween enthusiasts… lol.
Ethan,
That would be great to have the 45. There are so many cool monster rock and roll songs floating around, but no one ever releases a compilation CD that contains them all. Usually you always find the same ones like Purple People Eater, Monster Mash, The Witch Doctor, etc. But I’d love to have some of the more obscure songs like this one. Although I can’t see why it was obscure — I thought it was darn good.

I just had to share with you how much you would thoroughly enjoy the sounds I’m listening to right now. I don’t have XM but I do have ITunes and they also have an immense collection of streaming music and tunes from all around the world. Anyways, the channel is called (of course) “Doomed from SomaFM” and the music description says, “Dark music for tortured souls.”
The sounds are intense at times and most don’t like this style of music however, aside from the moans and groans now and then, it reminds me of my meditation CDs. Granted not all of them are like this but I never once thought of the music as “….for the tortured souls.”
I tend to favor the sounds of space to….as if your drifting along among the twinkling stars and billions of other galaxies. Woops….went geek there for a moment
Part of my passion….as you well know my friend.

Though I never explore ITunes, outside of using it to convert digital recorder files into a format Audacity recognizes, there’s something familiar about the name of that channel. It sounds like they play some great stuff — right up my alley! I’ll have to get you to walk me through finding it.
I agree, a lot of what’s considered dark ambient could be used for meditation, unless it gets really industrial, then it would probably break your state of relaxation. I guess it all depends on the mood you’re in and what the purpose is when listening. When I’m listening as I work on props, I have a harder time seeing myself meditating to it, but if I were listening while sitting still and relaxed some place, I could probably easily let myself go into a deeper state. Of course, doing something like prop work can be a meditative process in itself, especially when I get into the highly detailed mache work.
Thanks for letting me know about that channel!
