The Power of Fear
December 13th, 2010 by John WolfeEver since watching Nox Arcana’s Vampire Exorcism, I’ve been very interested in finding the actual movie Nox used for their video. I finally located the entire movie yesterday on You Tube. It’s a Russian film released under the name “Vedma” but it also goes by “The Power of Fear” in English-speaking markets. While the film wasn’t too bad, I won’t go as far as actually recommending it, but I thought I’d post a link (at the bottom of this entry) just in case you might want to check it out.
The best sequences take place during the priest’s three night burial ceremony/masses within the Gothic-looking church. The burial ceremony sequences were beautifully shot and the actress playing the vampire has a very seductive air about her. She makes you wanna give into temptation, but you know it’ll be hell to pay if you do.
Here’s the film’s trailer:

And here’s a very brief plot rundown, without giving too much away in case you decide to hang in there for the whole film: A journalist becomes stranded in a strange little town where he has a violent run-in with an evil seductress. During an attempt to flee, the man disguises himself as a priest and gets roped into performing what’s purported to be an ordinary burial ceremony for a local woman.
YT user, zina1078 has uploaded the entire film (with English subtitles) as a playlist. Just a heads up — this one’s not for kids. Along with several violent (but not gory) scenes, there’s also some adult situations.

That is just the kind of thing we need more of! I wish more filmmakers would go with the gothic feel, even if it’s just ala “The Haunting” (1963) or the classic horror greats like “The Wolf Man” with Lon Chaney. A lot of times, a movie can be mediocre but if the atmosphere is great, I love it. I just want to be in a dark surreal place like “Silent Hill” or this movie above, and just feel like magic still exists in the world.

You know John, for some odd reason this looks familiar to me. I haven’t checked the yt user yet to see the date this video was made but I could swear I saw this clip in 2007. It was around this same time I stumbled upon a movie called “The Fountain.” My passion for spirituality goes extremely deep and “The Fountain” screamed of some of my top interests: (a) a tragic love story of two twin souls (b) intense spiritual overtone and meaning-trying to understand the complexities of our Universe spiritually(c) darkness admist so much light and love. The reason I bring that up is because watching this tiny clip reminds me very much of that movie, though it has nothing to do with vampires.
Nox Arcana’s tunes are incredible and honestly set the mood for anything. I wish more film makers would use their tunes because their “music” is terribly powerful in creating and taking you to another place in time. Just look at your last 2 videos: the first one set to only music is chilling and it felt like I was getting sucked right down into the grave you were digging. The second one, however I felt safe and sound as though you were walking right beside me during the witching hours. The difference? Nox Arcana playing in the back ground and not
I always enjoy seeing what your going to pull out of your hat babe….you have extraordinary taste!

autumnforest,
I totally agree, autumn. And that’s what sucked me into this film — the atmosphere. Personally, I’m not a big movie buff. It takes an awful lot for me to sit down and watch a film from start to finish, but the atmosphere in the footage Nox used was so compelling that it made me actually want to seek out Vedma and watch it from start to finish. Though the overall story didn’t really keep me engaged, the beautifully haunting scenes in the church, along with a few others kept my attention and allowed me to slip into that place you described so well.
Goldie,
Oh, yeah, I remember you telling me about “The Fountain.” Great job on describing it by the way! You have quite the memory and such a way with encapsulating the themes of the story. I think the “The Power of Fear” was released in 2006, so it’s quite possible you came across this trailer (even if it was uploaded by a different YT user) back in 2007.
Music makes such a major difference in anything visual, you’re so right. Nox’s music would have been perfect in the actual film itself, but at least they did make the video blending all three night ceremonies within the church together, set to their “Night of the Wolf” track. Nox’s version is still one of my favorite vids and gives me a shot of major Halloween inspiration each time I watch!
And even though “Vedma” doesn’t have Frank Langella (sp?) in it,
I think you might enjoy parts of it anyway.
The Frog Queen,
It’s my pleasure! Hope you like it.
Pam Morris,
Very cool! I didn’t know you were a major vampire freak. That’s what’s interesting about the wicked female character in this film — she has all the earmarks of being a vampire, yet she never actually bites anyone or shows fangs. At least they didn’t make her all “Twilighty.”

Probably my all time favorite vampire film would be Daybreakers. It’s big, it’s awesome, and above all, it’s G-O-R-Y!!!! Definitely one of the bloodiest films I’ve ever seen! >:) This one seems to have interesting visuals, at least.

Damian,
Thanks for the info about Daybreakers, I may have to check that one out. I’ll admit I’m pretty bad when it comes to watching movies, though. I usually don’t like to sit still for any length of time, I have to be up and moving around in some way. In fact, the last movie I watched in a theater was back in 2006. Whenever I watch films online or on DVD, I usually watch them in piecemeal. It sometimes takes me three or four days to finish one film… lol.
