Time to Make the Halloween Donuts
May 11th, 2011 by John WolfeWhile doing a little searching for old Halloween ads today, I came across these three goodies from Dunkin Donuts:

I’ve been a Munchkins lover since I was a kid. In fact, I still buy them near Halloween but instead of scarfing ‘em down myself, nowadays I like to give boxes to my local Spirit Halloween stores, thanking the staff for displaying SoS flyers and business cards.

That was great, I love the first one. You don’t see commercials like this these days. It is sad, but i guess it is out off fashion.

I had donuts this morning because of you.
(There goes my diet.)

Ethan,
I’m partial to the first one too. Any commercials with the “Time to Make the Donuts” man always take me back to my childhood.
What kind of donuts did you have? Hopefully chocolate! I’ve had a craving lately for chocolate, but have been abstaining while I continue to work with my body on adjusting to food again. My diet’s still super bland.
summer,
My sentiments exactly.
Welcome to the site.
Camile,
I’d love to hear his reaction, especially to the first one. I enjoy hearing what kids have to say about commercials and products from twenty plus years ago, since those old advertisements have a different feel to them (as Ethan mentioned) from current ad campaigns.
By the way, I loved the pic where you have the red hair! I’m color blind, but it looked almost auburn to me. That’s such a good picture of both you and K.

Man I wish companies made ads for Halloween like they used to. I can’t begin to capture the pure joy I get from nostalgic ads like these. I wonder if the ads would even be good these days anyways? Maybe it’s best that they got left in the past.

It was chocolate. I had two one was star shaped. (I am such a child.) Once you get back to where you can eat again it will be all the sweeter.

Doug,
Maybe the advertising agencies assume we are too sophisticated now to appreciate the simplicity, originality and fun found in the retro and vintage ads. I suppose it’s all driven by the demographic and they’re always trying to appeal to youth.
I love watching the older commercials on YT, both Halloween related and non-Halloween. To be honest, when ads come on TV today, I mute the set every time. I do take mute off during October though just in case a Halloween ad comes on.
Thanks for watching and sharing how these ads touch you.
Ethan,
I knew I could count on you to help me live vicariously for that chocolate fix.
You’re so right about eating eventually being much sweeter. All of this has already been a great lesson for me. It’s helped me appreciate food and water in a whole new way. I’m so appreciative right now for what I can eat and drink.

Ethan is right…Mmmmm Dunkin Donuts!! I saw those stores everywhere in the south but hardly any on the west coast. In fact we have commercials for DD in our area but we don’t have a single DD in all of our state. It’s pissy because it’s just teasing us badly and though their donuts are awesome, it’s their coffee that won me over. I could get an extra large size coffee for under 2 bucks in the south. My ex thought I was crazy because I would hit up the DD right around the corner from where we lived and buy 4 extra large coffees. LoL certainly not to drink all at once but to save them and store them in the fridge. I LOVE ice cold coffee! Even though watching these delightful ads made me REALLY crave those Muchkins big time, I was reminded all over again how much I relish the taste of their coffee and how I can no longer satisfy such taste buds. Thanks John
I do my best with my own home coffee and trying to erase the fond memories I have of their coffee.
You know my friend, between seeing these commercials just now and our weather drastically turning cold, windy and rainy again (last week we were in the 90′s) I can just about trick my mind into thinking summer has passed and fall is upon us again. My favorite season is fall and for many reasons but this just gave me a small sample of those great ol’ Halloween feelings I get. In fact, watching these gave me goose-bumps.
OH I know you get the “this” channel John….how do you like those “Terror Tuesdays?” I hate to say it but aside from the gym and my morning walk, last Tuesday I never changed the channel from “this.” You know how I am with old movies and to see scary old movies is even better so I was in heaven with this new line-up. I guess it’s just for the month of May but last Tuesday sure was a feel good day thanks to “this.” LoL that even looks strange to type…..I still think there should be a “that” channel. LoL then again who wants to be “that” when they can be “this!” LoL….oh my mind. I’m super pleased to hear your doing so good and able to eat to a somewhat satisfactory level again. Keep up the great job babe!

I agree with the above posts. The only one with a good Halloween commercial I saw this past season was Reese’s peanut butter cups. I think it was for the “dark” chocolate.

Goldie,
We may have talked about Dunkin Donuts not being in your area before (I can’t remember), but it still seems weird they’re not on the west coast. I thought they were pretty much everywhere. Since you like their coffee, have you checked your local grocery stores for it? We’ve been seeing ads here for a while pertaining to Dunkin Donuts coffee now being available in our local supermarkets. Let me know if you’re unable to find it and I’ll send you a few bags if you like.
Glad these ads, along with your current weather, put you in that Halloween place! Did you remember seeing the very first ad when it originally aired? Speaking of weather, we had some cooler temps last week and now we’re starting to heat up a little again. I’m gonna work on the air conditioner this weekend to get some nice cool air moving through the house.
I saw something about how “This” is running horror movies on Tuesday, but I haven’t really checked ‘em out. I think I turned it on the other day and Vincent Price was on. I haven’t been watching much TV lately except for some PBS stuff. I’ve mostly been reading and watching vids on YT and my DVDs. Yeah, if you’ve got a “This”, then you’ve gotta have a “That.”
Thanks for your support and kind words about my healing. I really appreciate it. I’m easing into the eating process and working with both my intentions, emotions and feelings as I relate to my body. It’s really been an interesting few weeks that have helped me to find and work on things that still needed to be healed (in areas of my body beyond my gallbladder and digestive tract).
Halloween Anna,
Oh yeah, that Reese’s dark chocolate was a good one! And even though it wasn’t spooky (I like campy Halloween stuff too), I also enjoyed last October’s Kit Kat commercial. It was the one where the kids were trick-or-treating during the daylight and the mom was wearing a witch’s hat, while giving out mini Kit Kat bars. I saw the Kit Kat commercial more than any other Halloween ad last year.

Barry Huddleston,
Lol — erotic cakes. That reminds me, we have a shop here in Albuquerque that specializes in treats like that. It’s called “The Candy Lady.”
The Frog Queen,
No worries, my friend. I understand. Thanks for your kindness. It’s always great hearing from you and I’m glad you enjoyed a trip down Dunkin Donuts memory lane, Halloween style.
