Trapped: Ghostly Destiny or Choice?
October 21st, 2007 by John WolfeIt’s often believed that ghosts continue to inhabit the same environment time and again because they are trapped, either due to some sort of tragedy or because they may not realize they have passed on. I find the latter reason to be somewhat irrelevant because I don’t believe there is ever an obvious distinction, at least initially, to be made (between this life and the afterlife) for anyone when they transition. It’s not like some catch on and realize immediately they are dead while others don’t. I like to compare it to the birth experience- seeing it in the same manner, only through the inverse. Even though we were completely present and aware when we entered into this world, we have no actual memory of the event. All we know (when we look back on our early childhood) is that we just were. It’s like our existence always was, yet for most of us, we can’t seem to recall much prior to turning one or two years old.
We never truly had an “a-ha” moment of becoming conscious. Consciousness just seems to have always accompanied us, despite the fact we have zero recall of our transition into this environment and anything else immediately there after. I believe death is similar. Our conscious awareness of being in the afterlife and existing as pure energy seems to hit us all-of-a-sudden, in the same way we automatically seemed to identify with being a physical being while we were living in the physical world. I believe the death transition is so seamless (for everyone), that to say some are hung up because they don’t know they have crossed would be false. In essence, none of us realize we have crossed until it creeps up on us- very similar to life in the physical world- it dawns on us that we simply “are.” Yet, we don’t see millions and millions of ghosts hanging around the earth plane, as we would expect if they weren’t aware of making their death transitions. I believe we all leave this world in the same manner (metaphysically speaking) just as we all enter into it through the same physical means. There are no surprises or sudden onsets that overtake any of us. At a subtler subconscious level we are aware of the exact moment we will be making birth and death transitions.
Then of course we have the issue of tragedy. While this very well could be attributing to what seems to keep energy locked onto the signal of a certain environment, I tend to believe it primarily has more to do with their conscious choice or better said their choice by default. I believe there are infinite experiences waiting beyond the veil of death-including returning to the physical plane, yet some entities choose to limit themselves in the afterlife in the same manner in which they limited themselves during their physical experience. They don’t believe (through their energetic vibration) there is anything better out there for them. They seem to retain their disempowered state all the way to the grave and beyond. They continue to imprison themselves even after seemingly releasing from all the worries that appeared to only hinge on their physical existences.
While I feel that a large portion of people that cross over are in close enough proximity to come into the awareness of their infinite nature and unlimited potential, there are many that tend to hold the weight of the physical world on their shoulders, even after passing on. I believe these are the entities that are the prime candidates for acquiring a ghost like status. I have stated (in Making the Death Transition) that I feel we do return to the full awareness of how amazing we are after we pass, yet I’ve also spoken of there being other options. These other options stem from free will. It stands to reason that if we have free will while being physically focused- meaning we are free to choose whatever experiences we wish to encounter while existing within the earth plane, then we also are bestowed the same abilities in subtler existences as well. Why would this inalienable right be any different when we pass on? We can either choose to follow the natural energy current of the Universe or we can buck it and fight it while either being physical or “deceased.”
In summary, I think that we have to look no further than the birth experience to catch a glimpse of what it’s like to transition into the afterlife. And we have to look no further than how we conduct ourselves through our attitudes and emotions, in this environment, to catch a glimpse of how we will interact in the subtler realms after making our transition. If we can use these two models to help explain life and death, then I believe we can also use them to explain why the majority of ghosts decide to cling to certain locations. This doesn’t mean they are doomed to wander the halls of a lonely mansion for eternity, it only means they have to make a conscious decision to release. And that subject, along with the environments that await them after making that decision will be the subject of my next entry.
