Twilight Parody: Firelight

November 17th, 2009 by John Wolfe

With anticipation running high for the November 20th release of New Moon, SNL recently ran this kooky spoof of The Twilight Saga. While watching “Firelight,” I found myself expecting an appearance by Abbott and Costello — after all, they did meet Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankentsein. :)

I still haven’t caught “Twilight fever,” but I continue to be fascinated by the author, Stephenie Meyer. I love her description of how the concept for the story first appeared to her in a vivid dream. It’s very similar to how Mary Shelley was said to have found her inspiration for Frankenstein during a dream. Plus, I just love success stories and Stephenie and the Twilight series absolutely represent that in a gargantuan way!

I admit that the girlie part of me loves “Twilight” but the logical side of me thinks the acting is horrendous and the story was stolen from several notable vampire authors in the romance genre–very specific things that were clearly stolen. So, I don’t have any respect really for Meyer, but I think she was brilliant to find a niche and take advantage of it. Any adolescent/teen girls knows that story completely hit the nail on the head about their fantasies. I loved this digital short–it was great! I like the idea of inserting another monster into that part–it made it seem even more ridiculous to turn vampires into loving pets. They really should remain vicious–that’s when they’re the most fun!

LoL, this was a good funny. I knew at some point in time SNL would have to do a parody of “Twilight.” If I’m ever up late enough on a Saturday night to catch the show, I usually do but the great thing about hulu is that you can catch up on your favorite shows at any time. I really hope hulu doesn’t start charging for us to watch the shows. If they just give the site some time to grow I think they would find their viewer count right where they want them. Not related to vampires but I just saw thee most incredible film on youtube called, “The Green Beautiful.” I think anyone who is spiritually in touch and close to pagan ways would absolutely adore this film. It’s been hugely moving for me and I wish that all of humanity went back to strictly living off the Earth. It’s 9 parts but well worth your time dear one, I really think you would enjoy it. I trust your feeling better, yes :-) Yaaaaaaaaaaaa, talk to you soon ;-)

That was cute. I didn’t know SNL did movie bits. I don’t watch it much anymore so I hadn’t seen such.

Here is another SNL parody but on Most Haunted with Hugh Laurie playing the part of Derek Acorah.

    autumnforest,

Never having read any books from the vampire-romance genre, I didn’t realize there were many similarities between Twilight and other works. My knowledge in that area is very vague and was probably summed up best by Josh Gates in a recent episode of Destination Truth when he jokingly chastised Jael for reading a “tween” vampire love story. :)

I suppose vampires are easy targets when it comes to modeling them after hearth-throbs. Though they’ve always been viewed as undead, their methods and mannerisms were still sensual and erotic even when they looked more “horrifying.” So, that aspect is definitely nothing new. However, Twilight appears to have pushed the envelope even farther on that theme.

I’d actually love to see an author try to take zombies and make them erotic and sensual. Now, that would be a true transformation! LOL.

    Goldie,

I keep forgetting to check into their “membership” idea while I’m on Hulu. I’m not sure if they’re still going to go through with that or not. If so, then I suppose I should stop embedding Hulu videos on SOS, as they probably won’t be available for viewing soon. Glad you liked “Firelight.” When I have some time, I’ll look for The Green Beautiful.

    Atrueoriginall,

Thanks for the link. Before even seeing it, I’m assuming they had to poke fun at Derek becoming possessed on an almost weekly basis. :) He’s no longer on Most Haunted, is he?

Atrueoriginall – LOL….I laughed so hard!!! I know of someone else who will appreciate the “humor” of the skit big time. LoL…..I especially like it when they slowed down the sound….LoL but nothing beats the thermal image of where this sound is coming from. I laughed so hard, I think I lost 5 pounds! John, if you haven’t seen it, you really should. Your totally going to love it ;-)

Thanks, Goldie, for the reminder. I watched the video autumnforest recommended about the Scotland graveyard (very impressive, by the way!) but forget to check this one out.
